Healthy leadership requires a team, with each member contributing their own unique gifts. For many years the majority of our churches have slipped into a highly clergy-centric model that is unhealthy and leaves lay people in a passive, consumer-oriented model rather than co-leaders.

Here are some resources that can help parishes move toward healthier, team-based leadership styles.

Shared Leadership Models

Ways to support Lay Preachers

The Encouraging Leader (from The Alban Institute)

Shifting the way we ask Lay Leaders to Run the Church

Forming Laity for Life and Ministry

Helping Committees to move forward or finish up their work

Ways to Involve Lay Leaders

  • Leading Prayers of the People
  • Lay Pastoral Visiting
  • Identifying Visitors (for clergy)
  • Friendly Visiting
