What is a Region? Canon 20: Regions and Regional Deans

A Region is a group of parishes that work together for communication, support, and consultation. Each Region is guided by a Regional Council, a Regional Dean, and an Archdeacon. The Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island has 10 Regions.

Role of the Regional Dean

Each Region has a Regional Dean, who is responsible for:
  • Providing leadership within the Region
  • Gathering clergy for collaboration and council
  • Convening the Regional Council
  • Overseeing administration for that part of the Diocese (including finance and property)

Regional Council Membership
  • All clergy in a Region are members of the Regional Council.
  • Their regular collegial meeting is called clericus.
  • Lay delegates are elected at each Parish’s annual meeting and also serve on the Regional Council.

In Prince Edward Island, the Diocesan Church Society serves as the Regional Council for Region 1, representing all PEI parishes.
