What is an Archdeacon? Canon 5: Archdeacons

An Archdeacon is a clergy leader appointed by the Bishop to support the pastoral and administrative life of a specific part of the Diocese. Each Archdeacon works closely with the Regional Dean to ensure that clergy and parishes receive the guidance, care, and practical assistance they need for their ministries.

Archdeaconries

While the term “Archdeaconry” is not commonly used in our Diocese, it is a traditional Anglican word referring to the geographic territory an Archdeacon oversees. The Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island is divided into ten regions, each served by an Archdeacon and a Regional Dean.

Role of the Archdeacon

Archdeacons:
  • Assist with pastoral matters within their designated territory
  • Support clergy and parishes in their ministry and mission
  • Represent the Bishop when the Bishop cannot be present
  • Provide leadership and oversight alongside the Regional Dean

Together, the Archdeacon and Regional Dean help ensure that each Region’s clergy and parishes receive coordinated support, clear communication, and consistent guidance.
