Full-Time Rector

St. Peter's Cathedral, Charlottetown

St. Peter’s Cathedral is a diverse community of the faithful who, in Christ, seek a deep personal connection with God and strong, nurturing relationships within our congregational family and the wider community.

Our ministries and spiritual growth are grounded in Eucharistic prayer, contemplation, and devotion. These are expressed with reverence and timeless beauty through the liturgy and music of the Anglo-Catholic tradition.

As we discern our path forward in faith and fellowship, we envision a future guided by Jesus’ principles of love, generosity, compassion, service to others, humility, and sincerity.

As a congregation, we envision the expansion of our ministry to youth—the future of our Cathedral and a vital bridge between generations. We also recognize the importance of a generous and open ministry, so that all may partake in the goodness of God’s grace. We value our ecumenical and social connections, which allow us to live out our faith beyond the Cathedral and to recognize that the marginalized and oppressed are our blessed brothers and sisters in Christ.

We joyfully invite our Island community to join us in soulful worship and in the beauty of holiness, as we open our hearts to share the love and generosity of Jesus with all.

The Rector We Seek

The Rector in our Anglo-Catholic parish should blend deep liturgical precision with a profound sense of pastoral care and visionary leadership. This role requires a unique combination of sacramental devotion and practical administrative skill.

  • Liturgical Excellence and Theological Proficiency: As the chief liturgist, the Rector should possess a high degree of skill in conducting worship. In an Anglo-Catholic context, this includes a deep understanding of sacramental theology, the daily office, and traditional ritual practices. The Rector should have a firm grasp of the Bible, church history, and classic Christian doctrines. They must be an effective preacher who can articulate the Gospel in a way that inspires and forms disciples.
  • Pastoral Care and Growth: A survey of parishioners highlighted youth engagement, community outreach, and pastoral care as priorities for the Rector and the Cathedral family. Inspired leadership by the Rector will be essential to achieving goals in these areas.
  • Administrative Acumen: While Wardens and Vestry provide necessary oversight of parish finances, property, and staff, it is expected that the Rector will support smooth operations of the Cathedral through clear and timely communications, scheduling, and coordination with parish organizations.  Skills in planning and stewardship development will be valuable competencies.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Our Rector will have strong personal leadership skills while working with lay leadership to empower the congregation to use their gifts. They should be adept at building ministry teams and navigating conflict with assertiveness and grace.

Personal Skills & Attributes

  • Spiritual Maturity & Devotion: The Rector will be a person of deep prayer, showing evidence of personal spiritual growth and a healthy self-awareness.
  • Emotional Intelligence & Empathy: A "sine qua non" of the role is the ability to provide pastoral care to the sick, dying, and sorrowful with genuine compassion.
  • Integrity & Humility: As a representative of Christ, the Rector should lead by example, maintaining high ethical standards and a humble heart.
  • Resilience & Self-Care: Given the weight of spiritual welfare, a Rector should manage their time effectively, prioritizing rest and personal relationships to avoid burnout.
  • Engagement: The Rector should have the ability to engage, motivate and help guide Parishioners in offering their time and talent toward meeting the needs of the parish and supporting the work of spiritual leaders.
  • Communicative & Social Skills: They will be a good listener and an effective written and verbal communicator, able to connect with people of all kinds within and outside the parish.

We wish to reinforce the role of St. Peter’s Cathedral as a sacred place to worship the timeless wisdom of God and to belong to the body of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to communicate by word and deed the relevance of the message of Christ and the Cathedral in helping members and the broader community, deal with the challenging realities of our world in a more compassionate and effective way. The Rector will be expected to be a leader in translating this to the congregation and in creating a meaningful reason for new members to be attracted to the Cathedral family.
