The lovely and moving Service of Advent Lessons and Carols will take place this year in St. George's Round Church on December 8th at 5pm, with St. George's Choir under the direction of Music Director Garth MacPhee.
Music of the service will include Palestrina's Matin and Vesper Responsories, Laetentur caeli by William Byrd, A spotless rose by Herbert Howells, Sergei Rachmaninoff's Bogaroditse Devo and Lift up your heads by Orlando Gibbons, among many others. In addition, beautiful hymns and readings of the Advent Season will be included.
The music and readings will be based on the words of the O Antiphons. The O Antiphons were first sung as early as the eighth century. These Antiphons use biblical imagery from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the word "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah. The closing voluntary will be Nun komm der Heiden Heiland by J.S. Bach. The Offering at this Service will be in support of St. George’s Christmas Family Outreach. Parents can have their children with them in the church or with a childcare worker in the nursery room at the church entrance.
We look forward to welcoming you to this service!
