Imagine being in a hospital to support a loved one in a moment when they need medical attention, and the lights go out. The chorus of beeps and hum of machines that deliver life giving care, go silent. Imagine how that might feel if you depended on that care? Imagine how that might feel if you were one of the medical professionals responsible for providing care in those moments? It’s a frightening thought, and fortunately not one we often have to consider in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
St. Luke’s Hospital is located in Nablus on the West Bank in Palestine, and is a hospital operated by the Episcopal (Anglican) Diocese of Jerusalem. Canadian Anglicans through Alongside Hope have been supporting this ministry for many years, and more especially during the current war.
St. Luke’s hospital serves a population of nearly half a million people; that’s including 57 marginalized villages and four nearby refugee camps. But unreliable electricity and costly fuel make health care delivery a challenge during the best of times, or a crisis during the worst of times.
Alongside Hope has been working in partnership with the Diocese of Jerusalem to fund the purchase and installation of 407 solar panels for St. Luke’s Hospital. This project will cost $352,000. We are so grateful and encouraged to hear that a private donor in Canada has agreed to match funds for this project meaning every gift of donation is doubled in impact! Anglicans in parishes across Canada have been working to fundraise for Alongside Hope to help.
“This is a strategic investment in energy security and operational sustainability,” says the Very Reverend Hosam Naoum, Archbishop of the Diocese of Jerusalem. “It will enable the hospital to function reliably under challenging conditions and contribute to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable approach by lowering carbon emissions.”
The appeal for Light for St. Lukes officially went out in the late spring. Our goal is to have $176,000 by October 18 2026!
As of September 19th 2026 we have nearly met that goal!

On Saturday September 19th the Anglican Parishes of New Germany and Holy Trinity Bridgewater NS came together for a joint fundraiser walk & rock’athon for the Light for the St. Lukes Initiative. Individuals from both parishes came together early on Saturday to hear about the project and to raise funds with their communities. While one group went out to ‘walk for st.lukes’ as their contribution, others had brought their rocking chairs to ‘rock for st.lukes’. All gathered together over some beverages and snacks to have fellowship and worship together.
Together the parishes raised about two thousand dollars to contribute to the cause! A big thankyou to all those who were involved in planning this joint event between the parishes, and for everyone who contributed and raised funds for St. Lukes. Truly your generosity and time goes a long way as we work together and walk alongside parishes and Anglicans across Canada to support all who rely on this hospital for their care in the West Bank.
