Shape Our Future: Diocesan Strategic Planning

The Diocese is developing a new five-year strategic plan, and we need your voice! As we enter this important season of discernment, we are exploring one central question: What future do we want to shape together for the Diocese, and what will it take to get there?

Parishioners, lay leaders, and clergy are invited to an in-person or on-line gatherings to reflect on day-to-day parish life and ensure our new strategic plan reflects local realities. Everyone is welcome. No special preparation or expertise is required—just your care for the future of the Church!

Why Attend? This is a space to imagine the future and name what we want to grow over the next five years. By attending, you will:

  • Help shape the priorities and direction of the Diocese.

  • Share your hopes and aspirations for parish life in your region.

  • Share ideas on how the Diocese can be more connected and supportive.

  • Discern together where God may be calling the Church next.

Your perspective is vital. Please join us in this hopeful, collaborative conversation!

BUSY BUT NOT FLOURISHING IN FAITH

Sometimes in Churchland we get so busy, we lose track of our core purpose. It can be of the tyranny of "the urgent squeezing out the important." Or it can be the habit of responding to needs without taking the time to carefully discern it is the right thing for your church to do.

If you’ve ever noticed your church doing a lot but not truly moving people forward in their spiritual lives, read this article, Think Steps, Not Programs, published by the Irresistible Church Network.

THE MISSION OF BEFRIENDING Workshop

HURRY! DEADLINE to register is March 15

Sign up for a free workshop on deepening community in a lonely world.

DETAILS: Saturday, March 21 at St. John’s Halifax, 2187 Larry Uteck Drive, (West) Bedford.

TIME: 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A light breakfast is provided.

(Program begins at 9 a.m.)

In a time when social media promises connection yet so often leaves us feeling isolated, we find ourselves living through what many describe as a loneliness epidemic. The Church, however, is uniquely placed to respond with compassion, presence, and hope.

Rev. Dr. Andrew Richardson, Vocation Minister (Atlantic) for The United Church of Canada, from Summerside, PE, will lead us in a thoughtful and engaging exploration of the Church’s crucial mission of “befriending.”

Through two inspiring talks—

• Befriending Each Other
• Befriending the World
—we will reflect on how Christian communities can offer genuine relationships and meaningful connection both within the church family and in the wider world.

THE MISSION OF FRIENDSHIP workshop is free, but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

SIGN UP HERE:   www.surveymonkey.com/r/BEFRIENDING
(Deadline is midnight March 15)

All are welcome— bring a friend!

Dr. Andrew Richardson serves as Vocational Minister for the three Atlantic Regions of the United Church of Canada, where he oversees clergy and ministry students and leads national work on collaborative ministry and mentoring. He also teaches the Ministry of Supervision Course as part of the General Council’s formation initiatives.

Before taking on this role in 2019, Andrew spent 31 years in congregational ministry across the Maritimes, including 14 years at Trinity Summerside in Prince Edward Island. He holds degrees from Dalhousie University and the Atlantic School of Theology, was ordained in 1988, and completed his doctorate at Columbia Theological Seminary in 2007. He has taught in a variety of academic settings, including the University of Prince Edward Island’s Seniors College and several theological schools across Canada.

Deeply committed to community engagement, Andrew has served on numerous civic and provincial committees related to safety, housing, immigration, and education. He has also been active at all levels of the church, including chairing the Boundaries Commission. Andrew and his wife Janet—who recently retired from the school system—live in Summerside, PEI. They have three grown children and once operated a local coffee shop together for over a decade.

Diocesan Annual Clergy Retreat

Exploring Spiritual Friendship - Monday, June 8, 2026

REGISTRATION is OPEN for our Annual Clergy Retreat: June 8th to June 12th at Our Lady of Hope Retreat Centre, Stanley Bridge, PEI, as we ponder God's gift of friendship and its many dimensions with the Rev. Dr. Dawna Wall.

Dorothy Day courageously stated that we all know the long loneliness. Living into our vocations means we are often holding a lot, and don't always have a safe place to put things down, or those whom we can examine the dimensions of the burdens. Others have been here before us, and through their stories offer us encouragement, tears of lament, laughter and understanding. Francis and Claire, David Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi, Aelred and Ivo...to name just a few of those who compass us about, with spiritual friendship.

ANGLICANS POWERING POTENTIAL

World Day of Prayer 2026

Thank you to all in our diocese who participated in any way (hosting, supporting, attending) with the World Day of Prayer 2026 on Friday, March 6. This global wave of prayer in over 170 countries and involving many, many languages, designed by the women of Nigeria: I Will Give You Rest. Come. (from Matt. 11: 28 - 30), had the potential to bring to life Tennyson's quotation: More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.  Seldom has the healing power of prayer been more needed in our world than it is now. There were 17 locations in our diocese that hosted a World Day of Prayer service, with a number of Christian denominations doing the hosting: Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Salvation Army, and United Church. These are the constituent denominations in the Women's Interchurch Council of Canada (WICC), the Coordinator of the World Day of Prayer in Canada (https://wdpcanada.ca/). Next year, 2027, will be the 100th Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer - a celebratory year!

International Women's Day 2026

It is interesting that International Women's Day follows so closely (March 8) the World Day of Prayer that has been designed by women for 99 years. The International Women's Day 2026 UN theme of "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls" was conveyed with the mandate: Give to Gain. Despite many gains, still only 64% of women globally hold the legal rights that men do. As the United Nations notes: There is the need for enforceable laws, equal access to justice, and the dismantling of structural barriers that hinder women's empowerment. These are goals that are needed every day, not just one day of the year. The March 2026 APP column, Give to Gain, in the Diocesan Times is available on page 5: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f__NPnkKx77gzVD5mvohJgmuLcL_cpSr/view

Misuse of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs): As noted previously, APP presented the resolution about NDA misuse at Synod 2025 that was unanimously passed, confirming the practice of the Diocese of NS & PEI not to use NDAs in cases of mistreatment, discrimination, harassment, abuse, and other forms of human rights violations. The quest to have legislation in Nova Scotia (already a reality in PEI!) that prevents NDAs from being used in such cases is now one step closer in Nova Scotia. Thanks to the intensive work of the NS Liberal Women's Commission and several key dedicated women working in the gender-based violence domain, comprehensive misuse of NDAs legislation was tabled in the NS Legislative Assembly earlier this month. To learn more about the misuse of NDAs, tune into Dr. Julie Macfarlane of Can't Buy My Silence and therapist, Dr. Angela Grace, in this excellent video: https://youtu.be/LZonLCwuEwo

Meaning, Prayer, Story, Suffering, Resurrection are among the topics covered. We have just finished an in-person course, and Rev. Kate will offer one on Zoom this winter, most likely on Monday evenings. One participant from our last round wrote: “Being With helped me build a more peaceful and grounded inner life. It encouraged me to reflect regularly, to learn to notice God’s goodness, and to become more grateful. Lenten Quiet Day at the Cathedral

Join the Rev. Frances Drolet-Smith and Heather Carter for a day of reflection, prayer and meditation focusing on the task of making peace. Despite evidence to the contrary, transforming the world is not an impossible task! Fundamental to our lives as Christians living in an often troubled world, is the understanding that hope is a choice. God calls us to the task of making peace and enables us to offer peace to others. A viable, practical way to cultivate peace around us is to deepen our inner life.

Walk the indoor labyrinth. Express your desire for peace in a visual art activity. Be still. Knit, if you wish - just be. Pray for peace in a world so in need.

Walk to the Cross

Good Friday Procession - Friday, April 3, 2026

The Cathedral Church of All Saints is putting together a Walk to the Cross for the morning of Good Friday, incorporating some of the traditional Stations of the Cross. Beginning at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica, we will carry a cross through the streets of Halifax's South End, stopping to reflect on aspects of Jesus' suffering and death through the lens of today's challenges. Stops will include the Provincial Courthouse ("Jesus is condemned..."), the Public Library, Spencer House, an elementary school, the Victoria Garden hospital complex. We will conclude with "Jesus is buried" at the font in the Cathedral .

We welcome clergy and members of various congregations to become part of this - please email Rev. Kate (kateheichler@anglicancathedralhalifax.ca), or call her at 902-448-3414 before March 28 if you want to participate. And please spread the word to your congregants if it doesn't conflict with your worship times that day. It should take 90 minutes or less.
