Synod Office Staff Updates

Strengthening Support for Parishes and Diocesan Operations

November 1, 2025 — Bishop Sandra Fyfe is pleased to announce several staffing updates and role adjustments within the Synod Office, effective November 1. These changes coincide with the establishment of a new leadership position—Director for Parish Relations, held by Mike MacKenzie.

Guided by our shared mission to participate in God’s reconciling work in the world through Jesus Christ, and our vision to create and sustain Christ-centered, mission-minded, ministering communities of faith, these developments reflect our continued commitment to strengthening parish support and enhancing the overall effectiveness of diocesan operations.

Our goal in implementing these staffing adjustments,” Bishop Sandra notes, “is to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of service with no interruption to the support and care provided to our parishes, clergy, and lay leaders.”

Jana Gauthier – Manager of Operations

Effective November 1, Jana Gauthier has been appointed Manager of Operations for the Synod Office. In this role, Jana will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Synod Office, offering leadership in administration, event planning, and records management. She will continue to foster collaboration across the staff team and support the overall efficiency of diocesan operations.

Jana will also serve as the Property Liaison for the sale and redevelopment of parish properties and has been appointed to the Anglican Diocesan Centre Board and the Building Management Committee. In addition, Jana has been appointed a Commissioner of Oaths.

New Email (as of Nov. 1): operations@nspeidiocese.ca

Tonia Wright – Executive Assistant

Tonia Wright has been appointed Executive Assistant, also effective November 1. Tonia will provide direct administrative support to the Synod Office Senior Leadership Team while continuing to welcome visitors to the Synod Centre and produce The Net News.

Her responsibilities include managing Bishop Sandra’s calendar, handling general correspondence, assisting the Bishop with Canon 25 processes (the hiring of Rectors), and supporting key administrative functions essential to the smooth operation of the Diocese.

Mike MacKenzie – Director for Parish Relations

As previously announced, Mike MacKenzie has begun his work as Director for Parish Relations. In this newly defined senior leadership role, Mike will nurture, guide, and support communities of faith across the Diocese—including clergy, wardens, and lay leaders.

He will provide leadership for the Engage program and offer pastoral and administrative support to parishes, particularly during times of transition and change. Reporting directly to the Bishop, the Director for Parish Relations shares in the Bishop’s ministry of mission, pastoral care, teaching, and worship, working closely with Archdeacons and Regional Deans to promote healthy relationships and sustain vitality across the Diocese.

Supporting Communication

To help ensure clarity and accessibility, the Synod Office has prepared a “Who to Contact” document (attached), outlining key areas of responsibility for each team member. This resource will be updated regularly as roles evolve. Suggestions and feedback are always welcome.

Please join us in congratulating Jana, Tonia, and Mike as they step into their new roles. We give thanks for their dedication, gifts, and ongoing service to the mission and ministry of our Diocese.

I would ask you to hold each of them—and our entire diocesan staff team—in your prayers in the days and weeks ahead.

Giving Tuesday: A Day to Do Good

Founded in 2012, Giving Tuesday is a global movement created to encourage generosity, service, and support for nonprofits. It follows the themed shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and takes place each year on the Tuesday after U.S. Thanksgiving—this year, that’s December 2, 2025.

Giving Tuesday is more than a date on the calendar—it’s a day to do good in our communities and around the world. Churches everywhere are finding meaningful ways to participate in this global generosity movement.

Celebrate Giving Tuesday by encouraging people to share God’s love through their gifts.

Here are some ways you can give:

  • Alongside Hope (formerly PWRDF)

  • Missions to Seafarers

  • Local causes

  • Your church ministries, such as Messy Church, children’s camps, seniors programs, refugee sponsorships, and other outreach initiatives.

Visit this Canada Helps webpage for ideas on how to guide participants on Giving Tuesday

ANGLICANS POWERING POTENTIAL

It is not too late to attend the Human Trafficking: Slavery Hidden in Plain Sight workshop, Wednesday, November 19, in the Great Hall (Anglican Diocesan Centre - 1340 Cathedral Lane), co-sponsored by Anglicans Powering Potential and the Outreach Committee of the Cathedral Church of all Saints. Start with a soup supper at 5:00, followed by a compelling presentation and opportunity to explore themes raised by presenter/facilitator, Rev'd. Canon Keirsten Wells. All are welcome!

November 20 - Transgender Day of Remembrance. The Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Cathedral Lane, is open during the day (9 - 6) for a time of quiet reflection, remembrance, and prayer, followed by an Interfaith Service of Lament and Hope at 5:30 pm. All are welcome!

White Ribbon Sunday - November 23, 22025, with its pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent against all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination introduces the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (Nov. 25 - Dec. 10).

Here are key dates in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (Nov. 25 - Dec. 10)
- November 25: the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
- December 6: Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
All are welcome to attend a Candlelight Vigil, Saturday, December 6 - For a candlelight walk, meet outside the John W. Lindsay YMCA at 4:00 pm; for the inside program of speakers and food, gather in the YMCA Family and Child Care Centre at 4:45. John W. Lindsay YMCA, 5640 Sackville Street, Halifax (corner of Sackville & South Park Streets). Many communities in the diocese will be offering a vigil or memorial on this date, so check out what is available in your local community.
- December 10: Human Rights Day - honours the date in 1948 when the UN's General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), stating that each person is entitled to fundamental rights, dignity, equality, and justice. Canada played a key role in drafting the UDHR. Alex Neve, offering the CBC Massey Lectures series 2025, available for listening on CBC Radio's IDEAS, acknowledges that today's world is not human rights finest hour . . . but it still could be! Despite the rise of hate and mass atrocities, a crumbling world order, human rights applied selectively, or withdrawn on the whims of political leaders, Neve explores where we've fallen short, and what we can do now to renew the promise of universality. A key baptismal covenant for Anglicans is to strive for justice and peace among all people, respect[ing] the dignity of every human being.
Alongside Hope

Alongside Hope

Alongside Hope in 2025

This fall our new Alongside Hope (previously PWRDF) Diocesan Rep Team has been busy at the Alongside Hope National Gathering with staff and volunteers from across Canada gathered in Toronto. As Chris Pharo has moved into different ministries, this year our diocese had three representatives present for the gathering; Cate Ratcliffe and Gillian Power as a Mapping the Ground we Stand On facilitators, and Leah Marshall together with Gillian as part of the Diocesan Representative team.

Our Team was encouraged and learned lots at this year’s national gathering and is excited to connect with Alongside Hope’s parish rep’s! We are in the process of updating our team’s contact list for parish representatives. If you have been doing this ministry and haven’t heard from us yet, or if your parish doesn’t currently have a representative but would like to hear Alongside Hope updates let us know!

Diocesan Annual Clergy Retreat

Exploring Spiritual Friendship - Monday, June 8, 2026

Save the date for our Annual Clergy Retreat: June 8th to June 12th at Our Lady of Hope Retreat Centre, Stanley Bridge, PEI, as we ponder God's gift of friendship and its many dimensions with the Rev. Dr. Dawna Wall.

Dorothy Day courageously stated that we all know the long loneliness. Living into our vocations means we are often holding a lot, and don't always have a safe place to put things down, or those whom we can examine the dimensions of the burdens. Others have been here before us, and through their stories offer us encouragement, tears of lament, laughter and understanding. Francis and Claire, David Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi, Aelred and Ivo...to name just a few of those who compass us about, with spiritual friendship.

Registration opens in January 2026
