COMMUNITY AT PRAYER

COMMUNITY AT PRAYER
A number of our congregations have prayer boxes established near their churches to collect prayers from the community. Here's another idea and this one can involve the wider community's particular concerns.

Neighbourhood chalkboards are also used to solicit answers to great questions. For example, 'If you could ask God one question, what would it be?' or 'Where do you find peace in your life?' or 'What is one thing about our community that we should celebrate?'  Community chalkboards are a space for dialogue.

The final GUIDING LIGHT: Workshop on Funeral Ministry is Saturday, March 9 at St. James', Shubenacadie.

Time: 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Anyone may attend this session hosted in the Chignecto Region.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

One of the most impactful ministries we have as Anglicans in our Diocese is funeral ministry. Our liturgies reflect a compassionate, inclusive tone, while providing an environment of pastoral care by our parish leaders. Funerals, whether in a church, funeral chapel or at a graveside, can connect people with a loving God and a warmhearted faith community.

Parish lay leaders, especially Licensed Lay Ministers, Vocational Deacons, and others, are being called to share in this pastoral office. As local ministers, they are often familiar with the families and communities. The Spirit is leading our Diocese to embrace more fully the ministry of all the baptized in this area.

Our Diocese is sponsoring, GUIDING LIGHT: A Workshop on Funeral Ministry. This free regional in-person training session is for all Licensed Lay Ministers, any lay person who desires to know more (perhaps to be part of a funeral team), and any cleric who seeks a refresher session.

Facilitators: Rev’d. Debra Burleson and Rev’d. Canon Lisa Vaughn.

Some of the topics explored:

  • Funeral planning with next of kin
  • Burial options
  • Words of Remembrance
  • Homilies / Reflections
  • Post-funeral follow-up
  • FAQs

Participants receive a HANDBOOK - tip sheets and templates for planning.

It is an explorative workshop, thus there is no expectation that participation will require a commitment to funeral ministry. Diocesan protocols, policies and Bishop’s expectations are addressed.

Contact: Lisa for more information lvaughn@nspeidiocese.ca or 902-789-4840.

A Clergy Quiet Day led by the Reverend Ed Coleman

Thursday, March 14th 9:30am-3:30pm (lunch provided)

St. John’s Anglican Church, Larry Uteck Boulevard

Join us for this quiet day engaging our senses. We will share in two reflective sessions on a passage of Scripture using Contemplative imagination. After each reflection, we will paint together with instruction.

We will end the second period of painting sharing our felt experience. We will end our day together with a service of Holy Eucharist, including the renewal of ordination vows and the blessing of oils.

About our guide for the day…

The Reverend Ed Coleman has been painting for over 30 years. He was mentored for three years by Gladys Stocks, a Saint John, New Brunswick artist. He has been shown in galleries in Saint John, Fredericton, Charlottetown, and Halifax. Ed’s work can currently be seen at the Lady Luck boutique in the Hydrostone. He has led workshops and paint nights at Propeller Brewery, in Church halls, online, and at Dorchester and Springhill penitentiaries. His works are in collections in Canada, the United States, and other parts of the world. His paintings are filled with texture, colour, and are done in an impressionistic style. Ed is serving as Priest-in-Charge for the Parish of Falkland and is celebrating his 40th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood this year.

APP is especially proud to support Canadian Mothers’ Union Link Coordinator, Genny, a member of the Mothers’ Union delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 2024, as she attends the 2024 conference in New York City, March 11 – 22. This year’s theme is: accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective" under the overall UN International Women’s Day theme of, Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. APP looks forward to offering future knowledge-sharing opportunities.
