News about CEWs
Last week we reminded parishes of the importance to submit CEWs information in a timely fashion. At that time, we advised you that CEWs would remain in operations until May 7, 2022. At this time, the Finance Team regrets to report that, as a Diocese, we no longer qualify for subsidy (particularly now that more stringent requirements for eligibility have been set for these later periods). This is in effect as of the reporting period of November 2021. This means that, unless reports that are continuing to come in offer significant changes in the data we are collecting, you may no longer see credits on your reports (depending on the timing of your employment periods). This said, we are very close “to the line” and encourage parishes that have not completed their reports to submit them promptly in the event that our calculations may change. Funding Opportunity for your Parish!
May 31 is the deadline for applications to the Growth For Ministry Fund. This fund exists to offer money for development or expansion of ministries, experimental or new ministry, projects that foster engagement with the wider community and the gospel, outreach ministry or initiatives which might not otherwise be pursued. These are broad categories, and a lot of interesting ideas from parishes, regions and VSSTs can (and have) been approved for funding. Projects of any size are eligible to apply for funding, and it is especially important to note that there is no project that is too small to apply. For more information, and to find the application form go to https://www.nspeidiocese.ca/pages/administration-policies and look for Policy 2.2.9. Youth and Family Ministry
Community Roots Summer Staff! For yet another summer, the Diocese (under the skillful leadership of our Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator, Allie Colp) will be running the much-loved Community Roots program. Community Roots has an incredible summer lined up, with day camps happening in SIX communities throughout the diocese! The Community Roots Day Camp Program is designed to do two things: first, to encourage young people to grow in their faith, or to learn about Christianity for the first time, and second, to develop leadership capacity in communities so that meaningful, local ministry can continue to happen there for children and youth. Basic Needs Ministry
According to the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia the number of persons identifying as being homeless continues to grow. Well Engineered, the company building the 8x8 building code complaint temporary shelters, wants to build more units and is looking for land opportunities to house them. The Catholic Archdiocese of Halifax and Yarmouth installed 20 emergency shelters on church grounds. Christ Church in Dartmouth, in collaboration with the Elizabeth Fry Society, has installed two such shelters beside its parish hall. According to Kevin Hopper, Manager of Partnerships & Community Development at United Way Halifax, deploying these shelters “provides us with a way to invest housing dollars into an asset that can be repurposed over time, as opposed to hotel stays where the cost is high and the money is lost.” Kevin wants to talk with any organization with suitable land (e.g. parking lot, empty land, or yard adjacent to an existing building) and an interest in the possibility of siting a shelter. Contact Kevin at KHooper@unitedwayhalifax.ca to know more. The Face of Poverty Consultation has developed a four part anti-racism study entitled Facing Uncomfortable Truths. The study draws inspiration from the work of The Reverend Dr. Bryan Massingale, the James and Nancy Buckman Chair in Applied Christian Ethics at Fordham University, New York. A forum held at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in New York entitled The Assumptions of Whiteness and the Challenge of Discipleship and Dr. Massingale's written articles can be accessed at To obtain a copy of the study send a request to Andy Sherin, Diocesan Basic Needs Ministry at nspeijustice@gmail.com (Photo Caption "Two 8x8 code compliant shelters for women without housing at Christ Church in Dartmouth.")
