Religious Life

For many years individual Anglicans, lay and clergy, have been affiliated with religious orders.  In this diocese there are men and women who are, or who have been, affiliated with the Sisterhood of St. John the Divine,   The Third Order, Society of St. Francis, All Saints Sisters of the Poor, Society of St. John the Evangelist and Order of the Holy Cross.

For information on these religious orders and/or learning about a relationship with the Order, please check their websites

Society of Our Lady Saint Mary, “Bethany Place”, Rossway, Digby County, NS.

At the invitation of Bishop Leonard Hatfield, the Society of Our Lady Saint Mary was founded in 1979 in Rossway, Digby County.  Bishop Hatfield asked that a “house of prayer and hospitality” be established in this area.    The members of this Society live a life of prayer and apostolic outreach.  They live under the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

They are assisted in their ministry and outreach by Associates and friends of the Society.  They have a hermitage and a retreat cottage for individuals wishing to make private retreats or those who are just looking for some place to re-create and renew their spiritual lives.

The local area affords lovely walks on nearby beaches.  There is also a private apartment within the main house (Bethany Place) available for quiet space.  Guests are welcome to join the community for prayer times in the chapel.

The community prays the four-fold offices of Morning Prayer, Noon Intercessions, Evening Prayer and Compline.  The chapel can accommodate up to about 20 people and is wheel-chair accessible.

All are welcome at Bethany Place.
