 Ordained

All baptized Christians share in the ministry of Christ. From time to time God calls faithful people in the churchto be ordained and to use their gifts in this way

In this Diocese we have Vocational Deacons(people who wish to be involved in a servant ministry to take the Gospel and its message into the world).  Usually Vocational Deacons do not receive a stipend.

We have Non-Stipendiary Priests  (people who have been identified from local congregations and affirmed by their church to assist in the sacramental life of the congregation).  They, too, usually do not receive a stipend

We have Stipendiary Priests (People who are seeking full-time stipendiary work in the life of the Church)

PREPARATION FOR ORDAINED MINISTRY

In this diocese we support Atlantic School of Theology, located in Halifax.  AST is an ecumenical school of theology and Christian ministry founded in 1971 by the institutions of AST’s three founding parties:  the Divinity Faculty of King’s College (Anglican), Holy Heart Theological Seminary (the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Halifax) and Pine Hill Divinity Hall (United Church of Canada).  The School is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and offers Master of Divinity and Master of Theological Studies degrees.

Stipendiary Priests are encouraged to obtain AST’s Master of Divinity degree;Vocational Deacons and Non-Stipendiary Priests may take AST’s Adult Education Certificate in Theological Studies or EFM (see also Sewanee) or or studies at Thorneloe College School of Theology

Anyone considering a call to any of these ministries must communicate with one of our Bishops.Since 2002 AST has been affiliated with Saint Mary’s University in Halifax.  This is providing many opportunities for students to explore new avenues in theological education, such as inter-faith dialogue, which is becoming a major part of the societal context in which ministry must now exercise its calling.
