 Lay Readers

The office of Lay Reader is an opportunity for ministry of the Spirit where an individual can respond to the call for the building up the Body of Christ.  This ministry is more than liturgical; it may involve one or more other areas such as pastoral care, Christian education, social action and parish administration.  Lay Readers, therefore, have the responsibility to develop their special talent so that the unity of Faith may be recognized by all.
Lay Readers are appointed and licensed by the Bishop to serve in a parish under the direction and supervision of the Rector.
To quote from Archbishop Hiltz:
“The ministry of a lay reader is indeed work that is inspired and graced by the Holy Spirit.  It is a good work, providing an invaluable service in the day-to-day life of a parish -- in the liturgy, in pastoral care, and in outreach to the community; a ministry to which we should continually give thanks and offer intercession.”
