L’ARCHE, CANADA

L’Arche was founded in 1964 when Jean Vanier, a Canadian humanitarian and social visionary, observed that people who were developmentally challenged experienced isolation and loneliness.  He invited two people to share a small house with him in Trosly-Breuil, France.  He named the house “L’Arche” (or Ark) after the biblical story of Noah and the flood.  From this small community Vanier’s idea grew quickly and spread around the world.  Today there are some 130 L’Arche communities in 34 different countries.  In Canada the movement began in 1959 in Richmond Hill, near Toronto.  There are now some 200 homes from coast to coast.  In our Diocese we have four:  Antigonish, Halifax, Wycocomagh and Wolfville.

In Wolfville the community makes peace candles, wedding candles and advent candles and many of our parish churches use these candles in their worship
