The Companion Diocese Program allows Canadian Anglican dioceses to establish a partnership relationship with an Anglican diocese in some other part of the world. It promotes mutual understanding and support, direct engagement in mission, and an enlargement of our vision of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It is not intended to be a program of financial support, but rather one of mutual sharing and understanding. Most of the thirty Canadian Anglican dioceses have a Companion Diocese in another part of the world.
Our companion dioceses are: Moosonee, Keewatin and the Diocese of Manicaland in Zimbabwe. This photograph is of a bust of Bernard
Mizeki, catechist and martyr in Africa who died on June 18, 1896. It was a gift of the Bishop of Manicaland to our diocese a few years ago. Bernard Mizeki, born in Mozambique, led in mission from 1891-1896 in Nhowe, a village in present-day Zimbabwe. The mission produced many converts. During an uprising, he refused to leave the mission and was killed. As his wife and a helper went to get help, they reported from a distance that they saw a blinding light on the hillside where he was lying and heard a rushing sound as though of many wings. When they returned to the spot, his body had disappeared. The site is a focus of great devotion to this day.
