What's That You're Reading?

An Interfaith Learning Opportunity with a Focus on Scriptures

WHEN: November 3-4, 2016
WHERE: Glenview Presbyterian Church, 1 Glenview Ave., Toronto, ON

About the Workshop

  • What is the role of scripture among faith communities?
  • Does it differ from faith to faith?
  • Or is it more similar than we might think?
  • Can we learn from the interpretive methods used in different faith communities?

In this new workshop, three respected leaders from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths share their methods of dealing with scriptural and religious text interpretations, and the issues or problems that arise. Interfaith dialogues often dwell on the positive but predictable message of mutual understanding, tolerance, and the love and service to humanity. While one can’t argue with such a message, it teaches us very little about the similarities and differences that make each faith unique. Nor does it provide parameters of any real value that help us work together honestly and effectively. This workshop goes beyond the platitudes to provide specific examples of teachings from three faiths to help participants gain insight and perspective, making the task of opening the minds and hearts of today’s congregations and communities a little bit easier.
