The Parish of Emmanuel, Spryfield

The Bishop of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island is searching for a 75% time rector for the Parish of Emmanuel Anglican Church in Halifax Nova Scotia.

The Parish is located in the growing community of Spryfield just 20minutes from downtown Halifax. Families with students, young and old, have buss access to universities such as Dalhousie, St. Mary’s, and Mount St. Vincent.  Kings College is located at the Dalhousie University campus.  The area is blessed with many lakes, rivers, walking trails and close to ocean beaches.   The Anglican Church in Spryfield is steeped in history. 

On April 28, 1853 land was donated to the Anglican Church on which a public schoolhouse was to be built. There the children of the community would receive secular and religious instruction.  This building was also to be used for Divine Services. The seventeen year Elizabeth “Bessie” Sutherland became the school teacher as well as conducted religious services, a very unusual occupation for a woman of that time.  We feel quite confident in saying that we had the first “female” clergy person in the Anglican Communion!

In 1913 the church was enlarged and named “Emmanuel”, “The Prince of Peace”. In 1941 it was decided a new building was needed for the growing congregation and that led to the construction of our present location in the hub of the village of Spryfield.  Our community has a relatively young population with a median age of 45 with children in 55% of the households.  For more information on the village, google “Welcome to Spryfield Halifax’s Best Kept Secret”.                                                                                                                                                                   

 Our mission statement says, “The community of Emmanuel Anglican Church strives to continue to serve the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of our parish family as well as the wider community”.    We endeavour to make this statement a reality as we do our mission work at our foodbank in the lower church hall as well as our many annual community events.

We are a very diverse group of Anglicans, not unlike many other families, however we have several things in common. The first is our love of God and Jesus and the second is our love for the Anglican Communion and our own faith community.  This faith has sustained us through our many years as a parish and more recently the past four years when we had a Priest-in-Charge instead of a Rector. One of the assets that we discovered was our ability to accept change, as each of the five priests-in-charge brought with them their own traditions, we learned how to be flexible in our style of worship.

In April 2014 our Spiritual Development Team presented the Diocesan program “Re-Imagining Church. The attendance at these gatherings ranged from 25 to 30 people and from the evaluations we received all felt it was time well spent.  Among the many things we learned were; how the church is changing with the times; that church is more than a building; how to improve the way we teach about God and the need for new ways and ideas to interest people in church.

In January 2016 the Rev. Lisa Vaughan, the Diocesan Parish Vitality Coordinator held a number of sessions with the parish that focussed on our vision and our mission. This enthusiastic group concentrated on where we are now and where we want to be in the future.

We are seeking someone who will encourage and work with the team of current ministries at Emmanuel as well as being mission minded in the wider community. If you are someone who is creative and passionate about their ministry along with having pastoral and conflict management skills and looking to the future with

an appreciation of the past, we may be the church for you!
