St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Dartmouth is located near the main entrance to the picturesque Shubie Park, a significant gateway to the historic Shubie Canal.  It has served the local area known as Port Wallace for 76 years, an area that in recent years has experienced a tremendous amount of growth.  Although situated in the Metro area St. Andrew’s has maintained its charm of a being small community church with a mission of striving to always be a Welcoming Spiritual Community to all who enter.   As a community we are in an exciting time as we are about to embark on a three year strategic plan which we believe will enable us to better meet the spiritual needs of our surrounding community.  One of the areas we have identified as a must to achieve this is a strong and vibrant music program within the church community and we seek a person who is excited to help us achieve this goal.

Parish Officers and Clergy:

We draw your attention to changes in wording by the Human Resources Advisory Subcommittee to the Diocesan Vacation Policy 2.1.12.  While the policy has not changed, i.e. classification or entitlement, the revised text offers clarity specific to clergy vacation time.  The policy is linked here for your quick reference: http://nspeidiocese.ca/diocese/policies/documents/2112-VacationPolicyFinal_2011.pdf

All Diocesan Guidelines/Policies & Procedures are linked from: Policies and Procedures

The Synod Office is beginning to receive advertisements for the purchase of palms and palm crosses for Palm Sunday.  This is a reminder that wherever your parish orders from, now is the time to be thinking about doing so.  Please DO NOT CALL THE SYNOD OFFICE.  Since the closure of the Diocesan Book Room in 2008 we do not have the capacity to take orders.  While we are not promoting one source over another, here are some suppliers you could contact:

GENERAL NOTICES:

Theme:  Waiting Upon God

Greetings from Faith, Worship, and Ministry as we enter the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

As General Synod's new Coordinator for Ecumenical Relations, I will be periodically sending out notifications about events and resources of possible interest. If you have events of your own that you'd like shared with the network of Anglican ecumenical officers, please let me know.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY - This annual time of intentional prayer for the unity to which Christ calls us officially begins at the Confession of St. Peter and ends on the Conversion of St. Paul. However, many communities will bookend their observances between the following two Sundays. The Prairie Centre for Ecumenism has several online resources related to the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, as well as a calendar of many of the observances taking place across the country.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS TO 2013 WCC ASSEMBLY - The tenth assembly of the World Council of Churches will take place in Busan, South Korea, in October 2013. The theme is "God of Life, Lead us to Justice and Peace." A founding member of the WCC, the Anglican Church of Canada is entitled to send send two delegates to this assembly. Nominations are being received until April 1, 2012. Details on the assembly, the expectations of our delegates, as well as how to submit a nomination, are available here. The Council of General Synod will determine our church's representation to the assembly at its spring 2012 meeting.

SEEKING STEWARDS - The WCC is also looking for stewards to serve at the next meeting of its Central Committee, which will take place in Crete from August 23 to September 7, 2012. This is a unique opportunity for 18-30 year olds seeking an intensive, international, ecumenical experience. Details on how to apply can be found here. The WCC will also eventually be seeking stewards for the 2013 Busan assembly.

WCC GENERAL SECRETARY TO VISIT - The Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, will make an official visit to the Canadian member churches of the WCC in March. In recognition of our full communion partnership, his visit with the Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) will take place jointly on March 13 at the General Synod offices in Toronto. Susan Johnson, ELCIC's National Bishop, among others, will be present. Accompanying the General Secretary will be Natasha Klukach, formerly General Synod's Coordinator for Ecumenical Relations, now WCC Programme Executive for North America.

ECUMENICAL SHARED MINISTRY CONFERENCE - The Diocese of Kootenay, the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior, and the Kamloops/Okanagan and Kootenay presbyteries of the United Church of Canada are together hosting a conference on ecumenical shared ministries. It will take place March 2-4 at the Sorrento Centre in Sorrento, B.C. Sanda Beardsall, professor of church history and ecumenics at St. Andrew's College, Saskatoon, is the guest speaker. A poster for the event is attached. You may also register online.

JALC TO WELCOME U.S. PARTNERS - The Joint Anglican-Lutheran Commission (JALC) will meet in Niagara Falls from February 15-17. At this gathering the Canadian commission will be welcoming representatives from its American counterpart, the Lutheran-Episcopal Coordinating Committee, to discuss ways these four full communion partners can work even more closely together in mission.

ARC CANADA CONTINUES - After November's 40th anniversary celebrations, the Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialogue of Canada is set to move forward with its conversations. Several suggestions for this next phase of ARC Canada's work were suggested during a fruitful joint meeting with the Anglican-Roman Catholic Bishops' Dialogue of Canada. An account of the anniversary celebrations and subsequent discussions appears in the current issue of the journal One in Christ. ARC Canada will next meet April 12-14 in Ottawa.

NEXT ROUND OF ANGLICAN-UNITED DIALOGUE TO BEGIN - The next round of the bilateral dialogue between the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada will begin in Toronto from May 14-17. This next phase of the dialogue will build on the work of the first six years of recent Anglican-United conversations, the fruits of which are summarized in the St. Brigid Report.

The Anglican Church of Canada

Classic Anglican videos available online

Ali Symons, General Synod Web Writer

January 20, 2012 - Anglican Video has dug into its archives and digitized another batch of classic long and short features, each covering a different aspect of life in the Anglican Church of Canada. The videos-on baptism, Indigenous Peoples, sexual misconduct, and a former Primate-are available for free viewing through the Anglican Church of Canada's website. Several can also be downloaded and used as resources for local communities.

1. Michael Peers: Called to Be a Leader (2004)
This 52-minute documentary is about the life and career of Archbishop Michael Peers, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada from 1986 to 2004. The years of Peers' primacy covered some of the most turbulent years in the history of the Canadian church. The documentary includes interviews with Archbishop Desmond Tutu; former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson; and the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Rowan Williams.

2. Baptism: a Life-long Celebration (2004, available for download)
This 25-minute program is not a how-to video but an introduction to baptism within Anglican tradition and practice. It chronicles the journey of Naomi, an infant baptismal candidate, and Stan, a middle-aged convert to Christianity.

3. Sexual Misconduct: Learn to Spot It, Learn to Stop It (2001, available for download)
Using real-life scenarios, this 28-minute video shows clergy, staff, and laity how to recognize the various forms of sexual misconduct that can occur in a church community. Information in the video complies with Canadian legislation concerning sexual misconduct. This resource can be used in parishes, small groups, individuals, or in other education sessions.

4. Written on the Heart (2003, available for download)
This eight-part video series helps individuals and Bible study groups find ways to integrate Bible study into daily life. There are discussion starters and the series can be viewed in one session or over an eight-day or eight-week period. Written on the Heart features a range of interviews with theologians, educators, and Anglicans in the pew.

5. Search for Healing (1992)
This 23-minute video was the first in Canada to openly discuss residential schools and it reflects the courage of the Anglican Church of Canada at the time. While many fought to protect themselves from litigation, the Anglican Church of Canada produced this video, which was followed in 1993 by the official apology from then-Primate Archbishop Michael Peers. These events marked a turning point after which the church accepted responsibility for the past and a commitment to healing.

6. The Seventh Fire (1995)
This 30-minute documentary explores a First Nations prophecy that the time of the Seventh Fire will be when the reborn First Nations offer spiritual recovery to North Americans of European ancestry. Narrated by the late elder Vi Smith, The Seventh Fire chronicles the relationship of Indigenous Peoples and European settlers, with many interviews from residential school survivors.

Anglican Video is staffed by Senior Producer Lisa Barry and Production Manager Becky Boucher. As part of General Synod's Communications and Information Resources department, they produce video resources for parish and individual use as well as spiritual documentaries aimed at a broader audience. Anglican Video has won many national and international awards for its work.
