The Truth and Reconciliation Commission Atlantic National Event (ANE) will take place in Halifax from October 26 to 29.  Bishop Sue, diocesan coordinators, and General Synod staff are stepping up efforts to promote broad Anglican participation in this National Event.

Ahead of National Events, the Commissioners hold a series of community hearings.  Please see the media release below with the schedule for community hearings in the Atlantic Region.

All are welcome to attend.  Church leaders and members – clergy and lay -- are highly encouraged to attend.  The hearings offer an opportunity to listen to stories and accounts of residential school students and the intergenerational impact of that experience.  As you may know, the only residential school in the region – Shubenacadie Residential School – was Catholic-run.  However, the ACC ran many mission schools in the Region before the Shubenacadie school was established.  It is important for all Anglicans to know about our church’s role in the legacy of colonialism that found expression in the residential schools system and, with God’s grace, to allow that awareness to positively shape the work of healing and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Please be encouraged to get the word out about the dates and locations of the TRC community hearings and to encourage Anglicans to attend.

For various Anglican resources (historical, liturgical, educational) related to our Church’s involvement with the TRC, please go to -- http://www.trcnationalevents.ca/websites/atlantic/index.php?p=362

Many thanks. Henriette

WIDENING EMBRACE CD LAUNCH AND CELEBRATION

Please join Carolyn McDade and the Atlantic Gaia Singers in a concert to celebrate the release of a new CD, Widening Embrace. Carolyn McDade’s new music carries us deep into “forest, water, sky and stars, the great schools of the universe”. The evening also includes a visual art show called All Beings Confluence, which parallels the themes of Widening Embrace in a little forest of sheer hanging panels. After expenses, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the  CD will be put toward ongoing work for the well-being of Earth. The Halifax launch takes place on Oct. 21, at St. Margaret’s of Scotland Church, 3751 Robie St. Come at 7 pm to view the art; singing starts at 730 pm. Admission is free, all are welcome, reception to follow.

The Anglican Church of Canada is a party to the Indian Residential
School Agreement that initiated the formation of the Truth and
Reconciliation Commission. The National Event in Halifax is one of seven such events to be held across Canada with the specific purpose of raising the awareness of the general public about the impacts of the the Residential Schools on the lives of residential school students and the communities they returned to. The Diocese is active
in the organizing of the Halifax National Event. Please set aside these dates on your calendar and plan to attend.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

[ released September 27, 2011 - Halifax, NS]

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) seeks volunteers to help organize the Atlantic National Event.

Residential Schools existed from the 1870’s to as late as 1996. During this era, more than 150,000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children were placed in the schools often against their parents’ wishes and were forbidden to practice their own culture.  Today there are 80,000 former students living and the impact of residential schools has been felt throughout generations. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has a mandate to learn the truth about what happened in the residential schools and to share this truth with all Canadians.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada will hold its third National Event at the World Trade and Convention Centre and the Metro Centre, in Halifax, on October 26 to 29 and is seeking local volunteers to help with the Event.  Volunteers will have a critical role to ensuring the success of this historical and significant event.

The Atlantic National Event will be an opportunity for Residential School survivors to share their experiences with the Commission and the rest of Canada. It will also be a unique opportunity for all Nova Scotians and Atlantic Canadians to learn about Aboriginal culture and the legacy of the Residential School system.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Atlantic National Event, please visit the TRC website at www.trc.ca, Atlantic National Event and the “How I Can Help” tab to learn more about volunteering at the Atlantic National Event and to complete the on-line volunteer application form.

You can learn more about the Commission and its mandate at www.trc.ca.

Rethinking Church & Popular Culture

A continuing education opportunity presented by the AST Integrated Alumni Association

DATE: November 3-4, 2011

LOCATION: St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, Cape Breton, NS

WORKSHOP PRESENTER: Dr. Susan Willhauck, Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology (AST)

REGISTRATION FEE: $75 per person

DEADLINE TO REGISTER: October 26, 2011

Lady Gaga talks to Jesus during her concerts. Pastors tweet during their sermons. This workshop explores how the church engages with popular culture in post-modern times. Pop culture reflects who we are as people and helps shape us as a people. It is a primary instrument for forging personal identity and probing the cosmos for meaning. Theologians study and dialogue with popular culture not just as an attempt to be trendy, but because it has an explanatory significance helping us understand more about the nature of human life and society, the context in which we minister. We engage with popular culture because it is largely where an increasing segment of society contrives its symbols, rituals and ethics, and because of our commitment to the formation of faith in and through cultural contexts. While some people think that popular culture is driven solely by the irreligious values of the marketplace, other influences are present.
