FROM THE BISHOPS' OFFICE:

Bishop Sue and Bishop Ron extend an invitation for the last of three consultations that have been taking place this new year. These consultations are to help define the major areas of responsibility in the proposed new Diocesan structure. This last consultation will take place on Saturday, March 12th from 10am to 3pm. The consultations look at work now being done and new initiatives that the Diocese needs to undertake in these areas, how priorities can be set and how the work can be coordinated.

Attendance at the consultations is open to those who have an interest in shaping the mandates for these ministries.

Planning is well underway for the second annual PEI Youth Retreat. This promises to be a fun faith-filled time together for grade six to twelve students and their leaders. For more information contact the Rev. Cathy Pharo.

Keep in mind that your parishes may elect (or appoint) youth for the Synod coming up on May 26, 27, and 28. Youth who are communicant and regular attenders and at least 16 years old but not yet 22 years old at the time of the election are eligible to be youth delegates. The Annual Symposium on the Conservation of Religious Buildings and their Settings sponsored by Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia will take place on Saturday, April 16th, 2011, 9:00 am—4:30 pm at the Atlantic School of Theology Chapel, 634 Francklyn Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Once again Musique Royale is collaborating with Heritage Trust. At 3:15 pm, Barbara Butler and Chris Norman will reflect on concerts in churches, exemplified by a concert of Scottish and baroque-rooted music by the Musique Royale duo Chris Norman and David Greenberg starting at 3:30 pm.

Call for Nominations: Lieutenant Governor’s Faith in Action Award 2011

Atlantic School of Theology is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the Lieutenant Governor’s Faith in Action Award 2011. This annual award continues Her Honour, the Honourable Mayann E. Francis's deep commitment to community development, by providing recognition to those whose religious faith has motivated them to significantly enrich the lives of Nova Scotians from the wider community of which they are a part. The award is open to people from any religious tradition. Recipients will be selected by a committee that includes representatives from Atlantic School of Theology and the Nova Scotia Interfaith Council. The 2011 award will be presented at AST convocation on April 30, 2011.

More information about the award and how to nominate potential recipients can be found on the AST website at www.astheology.ns.ca. All submissions must be postmarked by March 7, 2011.

From one preacher to another...

These few lines are really an invitation to spend a few hours on Saturday March 5th thinking about the preaching ministry we all share. I find there is a difference between the demands of preaching as a full time priest in a parish and those of preaching from time to time as a Layreader. I have always felt that if we are asking men and women to take on the work of a Layreader, and if this work entails preaching from time to time, then there should be as many opportunities as possible given to them to do so, if only because the more frequently we preach the more we have a chance to develop our preaching.

I know that circumstances vary widely and that it is often not possible to give a Layreader regular, or something approaching regular, opportunities. All I am saying is that the more we can so the better for everyone.

All of this is by way of introducing a couple of thoughts about our Saturday. Rather than look at particular lections of the season (Lent and Easter) - as I'm going to do with clergy on the Monday - I think we will best use our time together on Saturday by thinking about preaching in general, about ways of doing it, about demands and challenges we face today as we try to communicate Christian faith. Perhaps we can also give a bit of time to sharing about what we find satisfying about preaching and what we find stressful.

Maybe we won't cover all this, but we'll try. Meanwhile if you wish, feel free to send me a few lines saying what you might hope for from this Saturday.

WORSHIP & CONCERTS IN OUR PARISHES

The Cathedral Church of All Saints invites residents and visitors in the HRM to drop in and enjoy the historic Anglican Cathedral on Martello Street, just opposite Victoria Gardens and by the VG hospital. Following the 12.15 Service of Holy Communion, our Lenten open house runs Friday afternoons from 1.15 p.m. – 5.15 p.m.. Friday dates are March 11 to April 15 inclusive.

Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir will sing Choral Evensong at King's College Chapel on Tuesday, 1 March 2011 at 5.00PM under the direction of Nick Halley with organist Paul Halley.

The repertoire for this service includes Thomas Tallis's Introit O Nata Lux, with its mystical, almost eastern harmonies, the simple setting of the Versicles and Responses, Psalm 8, set as a beautiful Anglican chant by the 17th century Henry Lawes and appointed for the first day of the month, and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B? by the 19th century English composer C V Stanford. The anthem for this service is From the Rising of the Sun, which is Sir Frederick Ouseley's inspired rendering of the text from from Psalm 113. The office hymn is Lucis Creator, the ancient office hymn of Epiphany, which will be sung as a Gregorian chant in its original Latin. The closing hymn is He Who Would Valiant Be.

The ethereal quality of the counter-tenor voice has attracted composers from the baroque to the present. In earlier times, its use seems to have been linked to contexts where women were unable to sing. In the contemporary period, its particular quality has made it a fitting vehicle for the setting of religious texts by composers such as Britten and Burgon. The concert also includes work by contemporary Canadian composers Colin Eatock and J. Scott Brubacher.

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011. “Spoilt Rotten: The Toxic Cult of Sentimentality” by Theodore Dalyrmple (available on-line from www.amazon.ca for $24.49, paperback available after September 13th). Blessed with a gift for concision and insight, Theodore Dalyrmple is a prolific writer as well as a prison doctor. He has travelled widely and been in many of the world’s more troubled countries. He offers some challenging and trenchant criticisms of the contemporary culture and goes a long ways to providing a diagnosis for what the Canadian philosopher, Charles Taylor, long ago described as the malaise of modernity. Dalyrmple focuses on the essential matter of moral principle and its absence or neglect. The cult of feeling, as he terms it, leaves out of the moral equation the doctrine of original sin.

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011. “Nomad” by Ayaan Hirsi Ali; “Reading Lolita in Tehran” by Azir Nafisi (available on-line from www.amazon.ca for $16.00 and $13.83, respectively). Both these books reflect on the difficulties and the confusions (on all sides) of the encounter between some of the political and cultural forms of Islam and some of the forms of modernity in the secular culture of the democratic west. Nafisi’s Reading Lolita (2003) illustrates the power of literature which is capable of providing a powerful self-critique of cultures and individuals so necessary to civilized life. Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Nomad, a sequel to her book Infidel, is both a deeply personal account of her rejection of Islam and a cri de coeur for compassion and respect that, paradoxically, hints at the place for religion in the shaping of political culture.
