Seeking: Energy on Youth Council

justgeneration.ca Seeking: Energy on Youth Council

The youth network of The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) needs your help! We are a national Council of young people who are passionate about justice, faith and the work of PWRDF. We are young adults aged 16-30 from all across Canada, full of energy and passion, and we are looking to fill some vacancies on Council starting this Spring! Are you the kind of person who is responsible, committed to justice work, loves to travel, works well in a group setting and wants to make a difference? Do you know someone who is all of those things?

Youth Council is made up of representatives from all 4 of the Ecclesiastical Provinces of the Anglican Church of Canada, as well as reps from PWRDF's partners, like the ELCIC (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada), Development and Peace, and the Student Christian Movement. It is a very diverse crowd, and we need to get even more diverse with fresh new faces. Currently we are seeking:

• two (2) representatives from the Province of British Columbia/Yukon,
• one (1) representative from the Province of Rupertsland,
• one (1) representative from the Province of Ontario, and
• one (1) representative from the Province of Canada.

Members of Council are appointed for one term of two years, with the option to renew their term for another two. We meet face-to-face twice a year in locations all of over Canada, once in the fall and once in the spring. In between meetings we all work hard promoting the work of PWRDF where we live, helping to run local events and educate congregations. The Council has occasional teleconferences in between the face-to-face meetings.

Many members of Council have had the opportunity to go on Partner visits to places like Burundi, Bangladesh and Brazil. Others have gone on to sit on the PWRDF Board of Directors. The Council has been represented at Justice Camps and youth ministry forums, and is building a very good reputation within Primate's Fund and the wider Anglican Church.

It also goes without saying the Council is a lot of fun! Members really enjoy the time we spend together working hard towards goals and developing our shared passion, but we also have a great time when we're not working – you'll find yourself making fast friends with members.

Do you see yourself working with 15 other young people your own age to help make the world a better place? Well then, fill in the questionnaire below before March 4th, 2011!

Attention Lay Readers!

A Seminar on Preaching

with The Rev'd Canon Herbert O'Driscoll

Saturday, March 5th starting at 10am at Trinity Anglican Church, 321 Main Avenue, Halifax

Registration upon arrival

~ lunch provided ~

From one preacher to another...

These few lines are really an invitation to spend a few hours on Saturday March 5th thinking about the preaching ministry we all share. I find there is a difference between the demands of preaching as a full time priest in a parish and those of preaching from time to time as a Layreader. I have always felt that if we are asking men and women to take on the work of a Layreader, and if this work entails preaching from time to time, then there should be as many opportunities as possible given to them to do so, if only because the more frequently we preach the more we have a chance to develop our preaching.

I know that circumstances vary widely and that it is often not possible to give a Layreader regular, or something approaching regular, opportunities. All I am saying is that the more we can so the better for everyone.

All of this is by way of introducing a couple of thoughts about our Saturday. Rather than look at particular lections of the season (Lent and Easter) - as I'm going to do with clergy on the Monday - I think we will best use our time together on Saturday by thinking about preaching in general, about ways of doing it, about demands and challenges we face today as we try to communicate Christian faith.  Perhaps we can also give a bit of time to sharing about what we find satisfying about preaching and what we find stressful.

Maybe we won't cover all this, but we'll try. Meanwhile if you wish, feel free to send me a few lines saying what you might hope for from this Saturday.

Blessings

Herb.

A concert of sacred music featuring

Andrew Pickett counter-tenor

Jonathan MacArthur tenor

Hilary Brown cello

Suzanne Lemieux oboe

Lynette Wahlstrom harpsichord/piano

The ethereal quality of the counter-tenor voice has attracted composers from the baroque to the present. In earlier times, its use seems to have been linked to contexts where women were unable to sing. In the contemporary period, its particular quality has made it a fitting vehicle for the setting of religious texts by composers such as Britten and Burgon. The concert also includes work by contemporary Canadian composers Colin Eatock and J. Scott Brubacher.

Tickets available starting 7 p.m. at the door

General $20 / Seniors $15 / Students $10

Dates: March 1st, 2011, May 3rd, 2011.

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011. “Spoilt Rotten: The Toxic Cult of Sentimentality” by Theodore Dalyrmple (available on-line from www.amazon.ca for $24.49, paperback available after September 13th). Blessed with a gift for concision and insight, Theodore Dalyrmple is a prolific writer as well as a prison doctor. He has travelled widely and been in many of the world’s more troubled countries. He offers some challenging and trenchant criticisms of the contemporary culture and goes a long ways to providing a diagnosis for what the Canadian philosopher, Charles Taylor, long ago described as the malaise of modernity. Dalyrmple focuses on the essential matter of moral principle and its absence or neglect. The cult of feeling, as he terms it, leaves out of the moral equation the doctrine of original sin.

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011. “Nomad” by Ayaan Hirsi Ali; “Reading Lolita in Tehran” by Azir Nafisi (available on-line from www.amazon.ca for $16.00 and $13.83, respectively). Both these books reflect on the difficulties and the confusions (on all sides) of the encounter between some of the political and cultural forms of Islam and some of the forms of modernity in the secular culture of the democratic west. Nafisi’s Reading Lolita (2003) illustrates the power of literature which is capable of providing a powerful self-critique of cultures and individuals so necessary to civilized life. Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Nomad, a sequel to her book Infidel, is both a deeply personal account of her rejection of Islam and a cri de coeur for compassion and respect that, paradoxically, hints at the place for religion in the shaping of political culture.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

TONIGHT!

The Jackson Katz Project is sponsored by the Metro Interagency on Family Violence

Public Lecture at Dalhousie University, 7:00 pm, Wed., Feb 16, 2011

(no cost, no registration required)

Soctiabank Auditorium at the Marian McCain Building

More Than a Few Good Men: A Lecture on Manhood and Violence Against Women

In his multi-media presentation,  Dr. Jackson Katz inspires men and women to confront one of the most serious and persistent problems facing college students: violence against women.

Dr. Katz addresses the topics of sexual and domestic violence, but also pornography, prostitution and stripping. Traditionally, these issues have been considered "women's issues." More Than a Few Good Men, by contrast, focuses on the lives and attitudes of boys and men.

In a provocative presentation that interposes irreverent humour with unpleasant reality, Katz stimulates dialogue between the sexes by helping to illuminate how the problems of individual women and men are linked to larger social forces. More Than a Few Good Men is not the typical lecture about men behaving badly.

Breakfast with the Guys: A Dialogue with
Dr. Jackson Katz,

7:30 am to 9:00 am, Thurs, Feb. 17, 2011

The Fleet Club, 2800 Barrington St, Halifax, NS

(Contact: Pamela Harrison, coordinator@thans.ca , 429-7287)

Taking It Personally: Why Gender Violence is an Issue for Men
(Tickets are $30.00, table of 10, $300.00)

This multimedia lecture uses the title and structure of Dr. Jackson
Katz's important and highly readable new book The Macho Paradox to explore some of the ways that male culture contributes to sexual and domestic violence, and to suggest strategies to enlist men in the fight against all forms of men's violence toward women. Topics covered include male peer culture in schools and colleges, men's uses of pornography, prostitution and stripping, sexism in the sports culture and the U.S. military, the many intersections between racism and sexism, and the role of homophobia in all-male groups. Katz uses entertaining and disturbing clips from his award-winning videos, including Tough Guise, to accentuate the importance of understanding - and changing - the cultural environment that condones or promotes sexism and violence.

Please consider registering and please spread the word to others that you think might be interested in this workshop. The theme the
organizers are working on is

"You are the salt of the earth."

There will be sessions on local and global partnerships, green themes and teams and poverty eradication.

There will be some support from the Social Justice Committee for registration and travel so please let me know if you want to attend.
