From Visitor to Disciple
After Back to Church Sunday, then what?
So lots of people arrive on September 26, 2010, then what do you do? How do you keep them coming back? Some things you will think of right away. Professor of Evangelism and Director of the Wycliffe Institute of Evangelism, John Bowen, has compiled a great little booklet (43 pages) called, “From Visitor to Disciple”. In it, he outlines 8 practical steps to encourage people to move from being a visitor in your church to becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ.
As part of the preparation for Back to Church Sunday, the Diocese purchased enough books for each parish to have one copy as a resource. If you have not seen the one for your parish yet, ask your Rector if they have received the parish copy yet. Some of the suggestions require advance planning so the Parish Council or the Spiritual Development Committee needs to read the book over the summer!
The goal of Back to Church Sunday and of all evangelism is to help people to find and build a relationship with God in Jesus Christ, and to experience the mercy, love and forgiveness of God in Christian community. If your Parish has a Prayer Team/Chain, ask them to pray for your preparations for Back to Church Sunday.

Implementing "The 'S' Word"
This TENS publication, authoured by Canadian Archbishop Douglas Hambidge (Ret), has been distributed to each parish in the Diocese. Archbishop Hambidge will co-lead this session with Rob Waller from the national church office's Philanthropy group.

Where: St. Peter's Birch Cove, Halifax (2 min. from exit 2 on the 102)
Cost: $50 for a parish group of up to 4 people.Registration is limited, and spaces are filling up, so sign up as soon as you can!
Register online via the Stewardship web page (www.nspeidiocese.ca/stewardship) and before Monday, September 20 at 5 PM, so that we can be sure our catering numbers are accurate. We are not able to accept registrations at the door on the day of the conference!
Remember, stewardship is NOT fundraising - it's:
- The responsible management of those things entrusted to our care;
- All that we do, with all that we have, all of the time;
- Everything I do and say, after I say "I believe".

Back-To- Church Sunday Follow-Up?
What to do with them once you’ve got them.
Are you wondering how your Parish is going to support new members after they’ve connected at Back-To-Church Sunday? The Alpha Course is an excellent program to help seekers and returning Christians investigate questions around the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more.
The Alpha Course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, non-threatening manner in 10 thought-provoking sessions. It’s low key, friendly and fun! More than 15 million people worldwide have already completed the Alpha course. In Canada 300,000 have taken it. Alpha runs in 164 different countries and in 104 languages!
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, has spoken frequently of his support for Alpha saying, "I commend it wholeheartedly." He writes of how he had, "strongly supported the growth of Alpha over recent years," and of his "delight at the Initiative."
As Bishop Sue Moxley recently wrote, “The goal of Back to Church Sunday and of all evangelism is to help people to find and build a relationship with God in Jesus Christ, and to experience the mercy, love and forgiveness of God in Christian community.” How are you going to encourage new members to be committed disciples of Jesus Christ?

Music Director Required
St. Francis By the Lakes Anglican Church, Lower Sackville, NS is currently seeking a Music Director who will be responsible for accompanying at Sunday worship services and other special services throughout the year, directing the choir(s) and overseeing the development of ongoing music ministry of the Parish. St. Francis By the Lakes is a family-centered parish that combines both traditional and contemporary music to compliment and fulfill the worship experience of the congregation.
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of Grade VIII RCM in Piano or an equivalent combination of training and experience. We are seeking an individual who has strong interpersonal skills and is eager to work with members of the parish to encourage their God-given musical talents within the life of the parish and community. This position carries a monthly honorarium.

Two Job Opportunities - Tatamagouche Centre
Tatamagouche Centre is a non-profit residential adult education and retreat Centre established by the United Church of Canada in 1955. The Centre offers a range of leading-edge programs, hospitality and services to both church and community in support of its commitment to transformation, inclusiveness, social justice, spiritual formation and community development.
Tatamagouche Centre is now inviting applications for two exciting new positions on our three-person Staff Leadership Team: the Program Director and the Organization and Outreach Director position. The Staff Leadership Team, composed of these two positions plus our Financial Director, will be responsible for guiding the Centre through a two-year transition process towards an increasingly collegial staff and governance model while maintaining excellence in present programs and daily operations. At the end of the two-year period, these team members will be given consideration for the permanent positions which will be defined through this process. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of Tatamagouche Centre in a direction consistent with its principles and values.
Program Director
The Program Director provides leadership and management in the area of program development, promotion and implementation, to fulfill the Centre’s mission in the church and community. The successful candidate will have experience with and a passion for transformational adult education, plus a proven record of assessing needs and opportunities, and developing, planning, promoting and implementing a range of participatory experiential adult education programs. She or he will be familiar with current approaches to innovative, participatory adult education to foster both individual and social transformation, and will be highly-skilled in coaching and teaming within a changing work environment.
Organization and Outreach Director
The Organization and Outreach Director provides leadership and management in the area of transition planning for both staff and governance structures, as well as personnel, fund development, food services, property and facilities management. This position also coordinates and ensures good communications with the Board, all courts of the United Church of Canada, key partner organizations and a wide variety of individuals. The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years experience of successful management of a community-based non-profit and/or faith-based organization, plus related post-secondary education or training. She or he will have excellent interpersonal, communication and team-development skills and be an innovative self-starter, comfortable working in a context of organizational transition.
Conditions of Employment
These positions are onsite, two-year term positions for 80% time (30 hours per week). Salaries are commensurate with similar positions in this sector. Both the Program Director and Organization and Outreach Director must be in essential agreement with the mission, values, theological and educational approach of the Centre.

Review of applications will begin the week of September 6 and continue until suitable candidates are found. Employment will commence on a mutually agreeable date later this fall.
