Back to Church Sunday is September 26, 2010. Are you ready? Who will you invite to come to church with you that Sunday? Is your parish working on being welcoming to those who will come back, or who will come for the first time to your church? Will the service be “user friendly” for first timers? Have you thought about what would be different for someone who had not been in church for 15 years? From those who have already experienced Back to Church Sunday, we are warned that when we invite someone, be sure to tell them about the offering and how is it used for God’s work in the church and in the community. That way they are not embarrassed and left fumbling through their pockets!
Archdeacon John Clarke has invited the eight bishops of the Province of Canada to come to church with us in PEI. They will all be visiting in parishes that day within our diocese. Bishop Ron and I will also be in touch with various media to promote back to Church Sunday. If you have local radio, TV, or newspaper, please send us their contact information so we can be in touch with them. In Metro, +Ron and I will be riding the ferry in cope and mitre one morning with invitations to people to Come Back to Church. How could we promote this special Sunday in your area?
The challenge is to double our congregations on September 26, 2010, and then keep them coming back.

From Visitor to Disciple
After Back to Church Sunday, then what?
So lots of people arrive on September 26, 2010, then what do you do? How do you keep them coming back? Some things you will think of right away. Professor of Evangelism and Director of the Wycliffe Institute of Evangelism, John Bowen, has compiled a great little booklet (43 pages) called, “From Visitor to Disciple”. In it, he outlines 8 practical steps to encourage people to move from being a visitor in your church to becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ.
As part of the preparation for Back to Church Sunday, the Diocese purchased enough books for each parish to have one copy as a resource. If you have not seen the one for your parish yet, ask your Rector if they have received the parish copy yet. Some of the suggestions require advance planning so the Parish Council or the Spiritual Development Committee needs to read the book over the summer!
The goal of Back to Church Sunday and of all evangelism is to help people to find and build a relationship with God in Jesus Christ, and to experience the mercy, love and forgiveness of God in Christian community. If your Parish has a Prayer Team/Chain, ask them to pray for your preparations for Back to Church Sunday.
Together, we can bring people into the Kingdom of God, one person at a time!

The Stewardship Resource Development group is pleased to present a conference this Fall focussed on how your parish can implement the programs described in "The 'S' Word" - a publication of The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS) authoured by Canadian Archbishop Douglas Hambidge (Ret) that has been distributed to each parish in the Diocese. Archbishop Hambidge will co-lead this session with Rob Waller from the National Church office.

Where: St. Peter's Birch Cove, Halifax (2 min. from exit 2 on the 102)
Cost: $50 for a parish group of up to 4 people.Registration is limited, so sign up as soon as you can! Registration is now open online via the Stewardship web page (www.nspeidiocese.ca/stewardship) and will close Monday, September 20 at 5 PM, so that we can be sure our catering numbers are accurate.

Back-To- Church Sunday Follow-Up?

Are you wondering how your Parish is going to support new members after they’ve connected at Back-To-Church Sunday? The Alpha Course is an excellent program to help seekers and returning Christians investigate questions around the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more.
The Alpha Course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, non-threatening manner in 10 thought-provoking sessions. It’s low key, friendly and fun! More than 15 million people worldwide have already completed the Alpha course. In Canada 300,000 have taken it. Alpha runs in 164 different countries and in 104 languages!
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, has spoken frequently of his support for Alpha saying, "I commend it wholeheartedly." He writes of how he had, "strongly supported the growth of Alpha over recent years," and of his "delight at the Initiative."
As Bishop Sue Moxley recently wrote, “The goal of Back to Church Sunday and of all evangelism is to help people to find and build a relationship with God in Jesus Christ, and to experience the mercy, love and forgiveness of God in Christian community.” How are you going to encourage new members to be committed disciples of Jesus Christ?

In accordance with Diocesan Canon 25, The Right Rev’d Sue Moxley is inviting applications for a Ministry Team for the Parish of the Resurrection, Sydney, Nova Scotia. The parish has expressed a need for a senior cleric who would act as the lead and a junior or recently-ordained cleric who would be willing to take on an apprentice-type roll.

Music Director Required
St. Francis By the Lakes Anglican Church, Lower Sackville, NS is currently seeking a Music Director who will be responsible for accompanying at Sunday worship services and other special services throughout the year, directing the choir(s) and overseeing the development of ongoing music ministry of the Parish. St. Francis By the Lakes is a family-centered parish that combines both traditional and contemporary music to compliment and fulfill the worship experience of the congregation.
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of Grade VIII RCM in Piano or an equivalent combination of training and experience. We are seeking an individual who has strong interpersonal skills and is eager to work with members of the parish to encourage their God-given musical talents within the life of the parish and community. This position carries a monthly honorarium.

The agreements of the Peace and Friendship Treaties signed by Aboriginal and European leaders many years ago are still powerful directives for us today, as we continue efforts to build trust and friendship in this region. They mandate our responsibility and respect; they also confound us, as we have not implemented these promises with each other as was originally envisioned. So, how can we ensure a future for our children, and engage as neighbours, citizens, communities, churches and other institutions in justice and right relationships today?
Join us for 3 full days of dialogue, learning, sharing and experiencing Peace and Friendship together. Guided by Elders, we will share in ceremonies, teachings and living together. We will learn more about the treaties, current approaches and realities, and our related responsibilities globally, nationally, regionally and through our churches and communities.

Gkisedtanamoogk is a Wampanoag Elder who has been engaged in justice and relationship-building across our cultures for several decades. Catherine Martin is a Mi’kmaq filmmaker, singer and adult educator. Margaret Tusz-King is the Program Director of Tatamagouche Centre. Laura Hunter is the Maritime Conference Minister for Justice and Stewardship, with the United Church of Canada. Several other Elders and presenters will also be in attendance, caring for the Sacred Fire, sharing their wisdom and contributing to our deliberations.
Cost: $250 (includes meals and 3 nights double-room accommodation);
$50 day rate (includes 2 meals, snacks plus day program)
