FROM THE BISHOPS' OFFICE:

From Bishop Sue

It is now 72 days to back to Church Sunday – September 26, 2010. Are you ready? Who will you invite to come to church with you that Sunday? Is your parish working on being welcoming to those who will come back, or who will come for the first time to your church? Will the service be “user friendly” for first timers? Have you thought about what would be different for someone who had not been in church for 15 years? From those who have already experienced back to Church Sunday, we are warned that when we invite someone, be sure to tell them about the offering and how is it used for God’s work in the church and in the community. That way they are not embarrassed and left fumbling through their pockets!

Archdeacon John Clarke has invited the eight bishops of the Province of Canada to come to church with us in PEI. They will all be visiting in parishes that day within our diocese. Bishop Ron and I will also be in touch with various media to promote back to Church Sunday. If you have local radio, TV, or newspaper, please send us their contact information so we can be in touch with them. In Metro, +Ron and I will be riding the ferry in cope and mitre one morning with invitations to people to Come Back to Church. How could we promote this special Sunday in your area?

The challenge is to double our congregations on September 26, 2010, and then keep them coming back.

Blessings as you prepare for this special day.

+Sue

From Visitor to Disciple

After Back to Church Sunday, then what?

So lots of people arrive on September 26, 2010, then what do you do? How do you keep them coming back? Some things you will think of right away. Professor of evangelism and Director of the Wycliffe Institute of Evangelism, John Bowen, has compiled a great little booklet (43 pages) called “From Visitor to Disciple”. In it, he outlines 8 practical steps to encourage people to move from being a visitor in your church to becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ.

As part of the preparation for Back to Church Sunday, the Diocese purchased enough books for each parish to have one copy as a resource. If you have not seen the one for your parish yet, ask your Rector if they have received the parish copy yet. Some of the suggestions require advance planning so the Parish Council or the Spiritual Development Committee needs to read the book over the summer!

The goal of Back to Church Sunday and of all evangelism is to help people to find and build a relationship with God in Jesus Christ, and to experience the mercy, love and forgiveness of God in Christian community. If your Parish has a Prayer Team/Chain, ask them to pray for your preparations for Back to Church Sunday.

Together, we can bring people into the Kingdom of God, one person at a time!

+Sue

2010 Legacy Fund for Lay Ministry

Where would the Church be without lay people?

Paul reminds us that all are needed for the building up of the Body of Christ, the Church. Gifts have been given to all people who are called to be a part of the body. These gifts are sacred treasures that need to be developed and supported by the whole body. We all depend on each other and by doing so the body grows and prospers. Lay people depend on the Clergy many times throughout their lives for support, advice, spiritual guidance and help of many kinds. The Clergy depend even more heavily on these same Lay people for help in carrying out their vocations. The work of Christ in the Church would not be possible without the gifts and vocation of our dedicated Lay people.

“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess the gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts.” (1 Corinthians 12:27-31)

If it weren’t for Lay people who would listen to those interesting sermons? Who would put the coffee on for coffee hour? Who would sing the new hymns? Who would teach the children? Who would raise the money? Who would help plan the programs? Who would take the Church out into the world? Who would mow the grass in the cemeteries? Who would keep our books? Who would create our bulletins and parish newsletters? Who would help the clergy visit the sick and shut-in? Who would help the priest with our new and exciting liturgies?

The clergy are able to develop their gifts and learn new skills through continuing education programs in the Church. Many such programs do exist for lay people but there is little financial support in our diocese to help them take advantage of these opportunities. “2010 Legacy Fund” is an endowment fund set up in our diocese to meet the needs of lay people who would further their skills and gifts for the building up of the Body of Christ. This fund is the legacy project of “300 - A Journey Just begun 1710-2010". It will provide leadership for our journey into the future for ourselves, our children, and the Church in the world.

Programs to enhance the music of the Church, church architecture and design, liturgy and worship, church accounting, new forms of worship, education for children, education for seniors, education for youth, computer publishing skills, etc. There are many gifts but they are all of the Spirit and our people need to feel that the whole body supports them in their callings.

Your gift to 2010 Legacy Fund will provide funding for the future of our mission in our diocese and, thereby, fulfill our Lord’s command to go into the world and preach the good news to all people. Thank you for your vision and support.
