Back to Church Sunday Resources:

Booklet “From Visitor to Disciple”:  The Regional Deans for all regions except Chebucto, Dartmouth and Fort Sackville, were given enough booklets for every parish at their May meeting ... check with your Regional Dean to get yours!  The next shipment of books is due soon for the three Metro regions.  Kelly Appleton will let those Regional Deans know when they arrive.  This little book is great for planning to follow up and answer the question “What do we do after September 26, 2010?”

Pentecost Challenge- Grow Your Giving by 1%!

The original challenge was put out by Bishop Sue in her May article in the Diocesan Times. There is a chart you can use to calculate your 1% target. One parish who started on the first Sunday in May to talk about growing your giving by 1% has shown a steady increase in giving every Sunday since then, so it does work! A member of Diocesan Council did some calculations (live link to Calculations document) to show what the 1% increase can do for your parish. If your clergy or wardens have not spoken about the Pentecost 1% Challenge yet, maybe you should! We are all called to help to make God’s dream of justice and joy come true. One mark of a healthy parish is having the resources to do the ministry to which God is calling you. This is one way to improve the resources available to your parish.

A Journey Just Begun

A History of the Diocese of Nova Scotia

and Prince Edward Island

1710 - 2010

Dr. Brian Cuthbertson

This is a completely new book on the history of the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island that has been written in connection with the celebration of the 300th Anniversary of  continuous Anglican worship in Canada.  The book focuses on the work and witness of the Anglican Church in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.  It is lavishly illustrated with pictures, both full colour and black and white.  It deals with the Church in its social context down through the centuries and its depiction of church life in the twentieth century is very well done.  There is a chapter at the end of the book which contains pictures and short histories of almost all the congregations and parishes of the Diocese.   The book is in landscape format and could be a very beautiful coffee table book as well as a reference book.

The book is available in May, 2010 and sells for $35.00 .  Parishes or groups wishing to purchase 20 or more copies of the book to sell them may purchase them at the price of $30.00 each and can sell them for $35.00, keeping $5.00 for themselves as a fund raiser.  The book will is available at St. John’s Columbarium on Windsor Street in Halifax, or at the residence of the Rev. James Purchase (455-1888). See the order form for more specific information.  This book will make an excellent Christmas gift for anyone who used to live in Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island as it is a great source of information “from down home”.

2010 Legacy Fund for Lay Ministry

Where would the Church be without lay people?

Paul reminds us that all are needed for the building up of the Body of Christ, the Church. Gifts have been given to all people who are called to be a part of the body. These gifts are sacred treasures that need to be developed and supported by the whole body. We all depend on each other and by doing so the body grows and prospers. Lay people depend on the Clergy many times throughout their lives for support, advice, spiritual guidance and help of many kinds. The Clergy depend even more heavily on these same Lay people for help in carrying out their vocations. The work of Christ in the Church would not be possible without the gifts and vocation of our dedicated Lay people.

“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess the gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts.” (1 Corinthians 12:27-31)

If it weren’t for Lay people who would listen to those interesting sermons? Who would put the coffee on for coffee hour? Who would sing the new hymns? Who would teach the children? Who would raise the money? Who would help plan the programs? Who would take the Church out into the world? Who would mow the grass in the cemeteries? Who would keep our books? Who would create our bulletins and parish newsletters? Who would help the clergy visit the sick and shut-in? Who would help the priest with our new and exciting liturgies?

The clergy are able to develop their gifts and learn new skills through continuing education programs in the Church. Many such programs do exist for lay people but there is little financial support in our diocese to help them take advantage of these opportunities. “2010 Legacy Fund” is an endowment fund set up in our diocese to meet the needs of lay people who would further their skills and gifts for the building up of the Body of Christ. This fund is the legacy project of “300 - A Journey Just begun 1710-2010". It will provide leadership for our journey into the future for ourselves, our children, and the Church in the world.

Programs to enhance the music of the Church, church architecture and design, liturgy and worship, church accounting, new forms of worship, education for children, education for seniors, education for youth, computer publishing skills, etc. There are many gifts but they are all of the Spirit and our people need to feel that the whole body supports them in their callings.

Your gift to 2010 Legacy Fund will provide funding for the future of our mission in our diocese and, thereby, fulfill our Lord’s command to go into the world and preach the good news to all people. Thank you for your vision and support.

The linked press release contains more details on the contents of On the Shoulders of Giants.

The new St. George’s Men and Boys Choir, Halifax

under the direction of Nick Halley, presents

Its début concert of choral music and folk songs

Friday, June 18th at 7:00 PM

The newly formed St George's Men and Boys choir, under the direction of Nick Halley, will perform its début concert of choral music and folk songs on Friday 18 June at 7.00 PM in the church on Brunswick Street.

The concert features some of the great choral music of the last eight centuries: beginning with an ancient and stunning Gregorian chant through to pieces by Byrd, Stanford, Howells and Halifax’s own Paul Halley, together with a number of Irish folk tunes about the sea.

Inspired by his own formative experiences of singing in choirs when he was growing up, Halley successfully recruited 16 boys from all over Halifax earlier this year, and for the past three months has been training them in the process of singing, reading, and performing music from various eras, cultures and languages.

“I liked sports as a kid, particularly baseball,” says Halley, “but in hindsight nothing compared to singing in the choir and learning some of the best music in the world. There are very few activities in which a young boy can perform at the same—or even better—level than someone older, but singing is one of those activities.”

The boys worked on their own with Halley for the first several weeks of rehearsals, but more recently have been singing alongside some of the men from the King's College Chapel and St George's choirs.  Through this experience, the boys receive an understanding of how this music works, what it means to their older peers, and what sort of dedication and focus it takes to do something excellently.

Saint George’s Anglican Church –popularly  known as “the round church”-- is well known for its crystal clear acoustics, splendid architecture and its powerful Létourneau pipe organ. “This will be an ideal venue for the fresh voices of the boys and the choral pieces they will be performing,” says Halley.

All proceeds from ticket sales will go to support the work of the choir. Tickets for general admission will be $15 ($10 for students) and will be available at the door.

OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST:

On June 4, 2010, the Provincial Government announced the next phase of
the review of the Heritage Property Act, engaging Nova Scotians in
external consultations. The Act gives government the authority to protect,
promote and preserve provincially and municipally designated heritage
buildings in Nova Scotia.  As a stakeholder with interest in this
review, I encourage you to take part in these consultations.

In the near future, you will be informed of opportunities to directly
participate in this consultation phase of the review. You will have a
chance to share your point of view and affect the way Nova Scotia’s
heritage properties are preserved and protected for the benefit of our
communities. As always, government will be guided by what is in the
best interests of Nova Scotians and their communities.

Government is acting on the recommendation contained in its heritage
strategy, A Treasured Past, A Precious Future. You will be able to
follow developments around the review of the Act online at
www.gov.ns.ca/tch/spp/.  If you have questions about the review
process, please contact Kevin Barrett, Coordinator, Heritage Property
Program, at barretkl@gov.ns.ca or (902) 424-5647.
