Booklet “From Visitor to Disciple”: The Regional Deans for all regions except Chebucto, Dartmouth and Fort Sackville, were given enough booklets for every parish at their May meeting ... check with your Regional Dean to get yours! The next shipment of books is due next week for the three Metro regions. Kelly Appleton will let those Regional Deans know when they arrive. This little book is great for planning to follow up and answer the question “What do we do after September 26, 2010?”
Pentecost Challenge- Grow Your Giving by 1%!
The original challenge was put out by Bishop Sue in her May article in the Diocesan Times. There is a chart you can use to calculate your 1% target. One parish who started on the first Sunday in May to talk about growing your giving by 1% has shown a steady increase in giving every Sunday since then, so it does work! A member of Diocesan Council did some calculations (live link to Calculations document) to show what the 1% increase can do for your parish. If your clergy or wardens have not spoken about the Pentecost 1% Challenge yet, maybe you should! We are all called to help to make God’s dream of justice and joy come true. One mark of a healthy parish is having the resources to do the ministry to which God is calling you. This is one way to improve the resources available to your parish.

Prayers of the People
(Composed by: Gerry Punke, Parish of St. George’s, New Glasgow)
Leader God, source of all our blessings, we join today with our forebears in giving thanks to the Spirit of Life that has stirred in our hearts and has given life, shape and meaning to our lives. Trusting in that same spirit to lead us into a future marked by hopefulness and joy, let us pray for the needs of the church and the world, saying:
Spirit of Life, be alive in us.
All Alive in us!
Leader For the gift of your Creation and for the special gift of this part of the globe that we call home: the majesty and beauty of its landscapes, the variety and abundance of its resources; the savagery and gentleness of its climate; and the richness and diversity of its peoples. May our roots go deep and draw upon all that is life giving, life affirming and life enhancing as we grow into a future full of new challenges and new possibilities.
Spirit of Life, be alive in us.
All Alive in us!
Leader For the gift of 300 years of Anglican witness in what now we name the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. For all of the history of indigenous and immigrant peoples, young and old, male and female; and, for the times, places and events that have brought us to this defining moment in our life, ministry and witness to Jesus, the Christ.
May our spirits lift with thankfulness and praise to the God of History who has loved and sustained us in the past and who will lead us into an abundant future if we have open hearts, a readiness for renewal and a passion for love and service.
Spirit of Life, be alive in us.
All Alive in us!
Leader In the same Spirit of thankfulness, we acknowledge as partners in this mission, the centennial celebrations of our Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax, and all the communities of faith who are also celebrating anniversaries this year.
May we sing songs of gratitude for all they have done to share the message of God’s reconciling love with the world; and may each of these ministries continue to grow and flourish.
Spirit of Life, be alive in us.
All Alive in us!
Leader For the gift of the worldwide Anglican Communion, remembering especially the Anglican Church of Canada and all of its international partners linked, as they are, in one vast network through Partners in Mission and the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund. We give thanks for all the national and international bishops, clergy and lay delegates who have gathered in Halifax this past week for General Synod.
May we rejoice with them in all that the wind of the Spirit is doing this General Synod to stir hearts, enliven minds, and open eyes to new possibilities, new obligations and new growth. For the church, may the best be yet unwritten.
Spirit of Life, be alive in us.
All Alive in us!
Leader For the gift of peace and goodwill among the nations and for the well being of all people. We give thanks for all peace keepers and peace makers. We give thanks for the Canadian Navy as it celebrates a century of service to this country; and we give thanks for the bravery and courage shown by our troops wherever they are serving overseas and especially in Afghanistan.
May we move beyond all that seeks to exclude, reject or diminish the other. Instead, may we be bringers of justice and mercy, a people open to difference and embracing diversity. In all this may we be guided by Christ like light and love.
Spirit of Life, be alive in us.
All Alive in us!
Leader For the gift of health, hope and wholeness remembering especially those in any need or trouble: the poor, the sick, the hungry, the unemployed, the oppressed and those in prison. We give thanks for all who work for our health and safety, nurture and support, giving thanks for one hundred years of nursing service in the Province of Nova Scotia.
May beauty, kindness and compassion be born in us again this day, and all days. May we give ourselves selflessly to each other and the world, casting Christ’s love and light wherever we go.
Spirit of Life, be alive in us.
All Alive in us!
Leader For the gift of life eternal. We give thanks for all who have gone before us in the faith and whose eyes, ears, mouth and heart were open to the moving of the Holy Spirit in their lives. In gratitude, we give thanks for all they did to make manifest the love of God.
May our lives too be spent giving glory to God. May we die in the peace of Christ, in the hope of resurrection and in the fullness of joy in the fellowship of all the saints.
Spirit of Life, be alive in us.
All Alive in us!
Prayer Over the Gifts ... Parish Anniversary (BAS p. 673):
Father, hear the prayers of your faithful people.
Grant that all who celebrate this Eucharist
may please you by the offering of themselves
and the fulfilling of your will.
This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.
Prayers After Communion
Gracious God, you have given us this time of joy
and have nourished us in heavenly things.
You have strengthened us with the gift of your Spirit.
Grant that, as we go forth in your name,
we may experience a new sense of your presence
in our lives and in the lives of others;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
We bless you, O God, and we praise your name.
You anointed your Son with the Holy Spirit
to preach goods news to the poor,
to heal the broken-hearted,
and to comfort the sorrowful.
Be present with those who go forth in His name.
Look upon your servants gathered here,
whom we now send forth as messengers of salvation and peace.
Guide their steps with the power of your grace.
Strengthen them in spirit and action.
Make their words the echo of Christ’s voice.
May those who hear them
be drawn to the Gospel.
Through them may your Holy Spirit
touch the hearts of all whom they meet;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Hymns
1. To Christians, To Make Use of Time (tune: Joyful, Joyful) ... new lyrics:
Those who follow Jesus listen
As he tells the story of
Faithful servants using talents
Given them by God above.
Time for women, men and children,
Time for nations’ rise and fall;
Time to spread His holy Gospel,
Build a church embracing all.
Servants all, we count our blessings:
Earth and sea and sky above,
And the time bestowed upon us
Through His everlasting love.
Faithful servants, take God’s blessings;
Labour to increase their worth;
Work to spread the Christian message
In the time we have on Earth.
We who would fulfill God’s purpose,
treasure all His gifts divine;
midst the wonders of creation,
use His precious gift of time.
Look to those who went before us;
let their story ever stand
as a light to guide our labours
spreading faith throughout the land.
Honour those whose stories guide us;
in their footsteps let us tread;
venture now into the vineyard,
joyful in the task ahead.
Let us strive to use the hours
that were given to us on earth;
and like servants with their talents,
labour to increase their worth.
Time’s the stuff that life is made of,
waste it not is God’s command;
we shall labour to His glory,
make His kingdom ever stand.
Time for women, men and children,
time for nations’ rise and fall;
time to spread His holy Gospel,
build a Church embracing all.

A Journey Just Begun
A History of the Diocese of Nova Scotia
and Prince Edward Island
1710 - 2010
Dr. Brian Cuthbertson
This is a completely new book on the history of the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island that has been written in connection with the celebration of the 300th Anniversary of continuous Anglican worship in Canada. The book focuses on the work and witness of the Anglican Church in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. It is lavishly illustrated with pictures, both full colour and black and white. It deals with the Church in its social context down through the centuries and its depiction of church life in the twentieth century is very well done. There is a chapter at the end of the book which contains pictures and short histories of almost all the congregations and parishes of the Diocese. The book is in landscape format and could be a very beautiful coffee table book as well as a reference book.
The book is available in May, 2010 and sells for $35.00 . Parishes or groups wishing to purchase 20 or more copies of the book to sell them may purchase them at the price of $30.00 each and can sell them for $35.00, keeping $5.00 for themselves as a fund raiser. The book will is available at St. John’s Columbarium on Windsor Street in Halifax, or at the residence of the Rev. James Purchase (455-1888) and also at the great service at Exhibition Park on June 6th. See the order form for more specific information. This book will make an excellent Christmas gift for anyone who used to live in Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island as it is a great source of information “from down home”.
2010 Legacy Fund for Lay Ministry
Where would the Church be without lay people?
Paul reminds us that all are needed for the building up of the Body of Christ, the Church. Gifts have been given to all people who are called to be a part of the body. These gifts are sacred treasures that need to be developed and supported by the whole body. We all depend on each other and by doing so the body grows and prospers. Lay people depend on the Clergy many times throughout their lives for support, advice, spiritual guidance and help of many kinds. The Clergy depend even more heavily on these same Lay people for help in carrying out their vocations. The work of Christ in the Church would not be possible without the gifts and vocation of our dedicated Lay people.
“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess the gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts.” (1 Corinthians 12:27-31)
If it weren’t for Lay people who would listen to those interesting sermons? Who would put the coffee on for coffee hour? Who would sing the new hymns? Who would teach the children? Who would raise the money? Who would help plan the programs? Who would take the Church out into the world? Who would mow the grass in the cemeteries? Who would keep our books? Who would create our bulletins and parish newsletters? Who would help the clergy visit the sick and shut-in? Who would help the priest with our new and exciting liturgies?
The clergy are able to develop their gifts and learn new skills through continuing education programs in the Church. Many such programs do exist for lay people but there is little financial support in our diocese to help them take advantage of these opportunities. “2010 Legacy Fund” is an endowment fund set up in our diocese to meet the needs of lay people who would further their skills and gifts for the building up of the Body of Christ. This fund is the legacy project of “300 - A Journey Just begun 1710-2010". It will provide leadership for our journey into the future for ourselves, our children, and the Church in the world.
Programs to enhance the music of the Church, church architecture and design, liturgy and worship, church accounting, new forms of worship, education for children, education for seniors, education for youth, computer publishing skills, etc. There are many gifts but they are all of the Spirit and our people need to feel that the whole body supports them in their callings.
Your gift to 2010 Legacy Fund will provide funding for the future of our mission in our diocese and, thereby, fulfill our Lord’s command to go into the world and preach the good news to all people. Thank you for your vision and support.
Special Offering Envelopes will be available at the Service on June 6th for our people to donate to this Legacy. Also, Parishes have received some envelopes and are encouraged to make them available to their Parishioners ahead of June 6th so they can consider prayerfully their gift to this fund. Receipts will be issued.

THE 300 FUND FOR LAY TRAINING
The 300 Fund for Lay Training is our legacy for the future of our church’s training of lay people. It will be used to help lay people develop their gifts for the work of our church through education. Your contribution will enable our church to move forward with informed and empowered lay people. Please give generously.

ANGLICANA TALES: A photographic exhibition of Nova Scotia Anglican churches by Peter Coffman:
EVERYBODY MUST SEE this beautiful and inspiring exhibition of photographs of Anglican gothic revival churches of Nova Scotia. If you are in Halifax any time between now and July 4, 2010, take 20 minutes (or more) at the Dalhousie Art Gallery, basement floor of the Dalhousie Arts Centre, just a few blocks west of All Saints Cathedral, at 6101 University Avenue.
Peter Coffman is a photographer and historian who has been doing research in our Diocesan Archives, and elsewhere, for the last two years on Gothic Revival church architecture of Nova Scotia. To mark our Anglican 2010 Anniversary Celebration of 300 years of continuous worship, in collaboration with the Dal Art Gallery curators, he has created this show of photographs with short textual vignettes that tell some of the history of the buildings and the people who built them. This show is more than a group of pictures! With his unique vision and magical use of light, Peter has made the inner life of the churches come alive and the viewing of this show a meditative and spiritual experience.
The Dalhousie Art Gallery is open Thursday to Friday, 11 am to 5 pm / Weekends, noon to 5 pm. Closed Mondays. Closed July 1 (Canada Day).
Admission is FREE. For more information, see the Gallery's website: www.artgallery.dal.ca

The new St. George’s Men and Boys Choir, Halifax
under the direction of Nick Halley, presents
Its début concert of choral music and folk songs
Friday, June 18th at 7:00 PM
The newly formed St George's Men and Boys choir, under the direction of Nick Halley, will perform its début concert of choral music and folk songs on Friday 18 June at 7.00 PM in the church on Brunswick Street.
The concert features some of the great choral music of the last eight centuries: beginning with an ancient and stunning Gregorian chant through to pieces by Byrd, Stanford, Howells and Halifax’s own Paul Halley, together with a number of Irish folk tunes about the sea.
Inspired by his own formative experiences of singing in choirs when he was growing up, Halley successfully recruited 16 boys from all over Halifax earlier this year, and for the past three months has been training them in the process of singing, reading, and performing music from various eras, cultures and languages.
“I liked sports as a kid, particularly baseball,” says Halley, “but in hindsight nothing compared to singing in the choir and learning some of the best music in the world. There are very few activities in which a young boy can perform at the same—or even better—level than someone older, but singing is one of those activities.”
The boys worked on their own with Halley for the first several weeks of rehearsals, but more recently have been singing alongside some of the men from the King's College Chapel and St George's choirs. Through this experience, the boys receive an understanding of how this music works, what it means to their older peers, and what sort of dedication and focus it takes to do something excellently.
Saint George’s Anglican Church –popularly known as “the round church”-- is well known for its crystal clear acoustics, splendid architecture and its powerful Létourneau pipe organ. “This will be an ideal venue for the fresh voices of the boys and the choral pieces they will be performing,” says Halley.
All proceeds from ticket sales will go to support the work of the choir. Tickets for general admission will be $15 ($10 for students) and will be available at the door.

Musique Royale celebrates its 25th anniversary season with a performance by the KERAMION TRIO featuring Paul & Nick Halley, with guitarist Jon Suters.
