Lieutenant Governor’s Faith in Action Award 2010 Announced

David A. Olding

Atlantic School of Theology (AST) is pleased to announce that well-known Halifax volunteer David A. Olding is the recipient of the 2010 Lieutenant Governor’s Faith in Action Award. Mr. Olding will receive his award at AST convocation, which takes place on Saturday, May 1, at 11:00 a.m. in the Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1340 Tower Road, Halifax.

Mr. Olding has been involved in prison ministry and has offered pastoral support to various organizations in the Halifax area for approximately 13 years. Following his retirement, he served for 10 years as a full-time volunteer chaplain for Correction Services Canada, making daily visits to halfway houses in Halifax and regular calls to correctional facilities throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He continues to provide support to organizations such as Metro Turning Point, Direction 180, Mainline Needle Exchange, Metro Non-Profit Housing, Community Action on Homelessness, Stepping Stone, and the "In from the Cold" shelter. His life is focused on caring for those who seem to have no one to care for them—prisoners, the homeless, addicts and sex workers. His passion and commitment are an inspiration to those who work with him and hear him speak about the issues facing the underprivileged and marginalized in today's society. He was selected to serve on the Nova Scotia Minister of Justice Task Force to Make Streets and Communities Safer and received a Faithful Service Award at the 139th Session of the Anglican Diocesan Synod. David Olding truly lives his faith in action every day.

The Lieutenant Governor's Faith in Action Award honours exceptional community outreach and continues Her Honour, the Honourable Mayann E. Francis's deep commitment to community development. Recipients are selected by a committee that includes representatives from AST and the Nova Scotia Interfaith Council. The award is presented annually during AST's convocation ceremony.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

The Story of Bottled Water, released March 22, 2010, employs the Story of Stuff style to tell the fast-paced, fact-filled story of manufactured demand—how you get Americans to buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week when it already flows from the tap. Over five minutes, the film explores the bottled water industry’s attacks on tap water and its use of seductive, environmental-themed advertising to cover up the mountains of plastic waste it produces. The film concludes with a call to take back the tap, not only by making a personal commitment to avoid bottled water, but by supporting investments in clean, available tap water for all.  Please watch this video posted at:  www.storyofbottledwater.org

The Sanctuary Garden Project

tree of life.gif

On Sunday April 11th at 2 pm the Sanctuary Garden Project will host a fundraiser and information session at Brunswick Street United Church, 2107 Brunswick Street, Halifax. The speaker for this event will be Marjorie Willison, a frequent CBC contributor on gardening questions.

The Sanctuary Garden Project is a new and innovative approach to building community among and between marginalized peoples and the larger community of HRM. Residents at some of Halifax’s inner-city shelters turn out every weekend in the spring and summer, to plant beautiful flowers, shrubs and other wild life to beautify their surroundings around the shelter.

At this event there will be a free will offering that will help with the purchase of bulbs and gardening equipment.

Marjorie Willison will answer all of your questions on community gardens and how and what to plant in your garden as you look forward to spring 2011. Don’t miss it!

For more information please email thesanctuaryproject@hotmail.com or call Kevin Little at 826-2523.
