For Lent, pray at your laptop

Anglican Church of Canada

February 17, 2010 - For Lent 2010, the Anglican Church of Canada is offering a simple online prayer space that will be updated throughout the season. The prayers are drawn from the Anglican Church of Canada's own prayer books, as well as those from ecumenical and full communion partners. They are paired with striking landscapes from around the world.

The intention is to offer a visual pause in the busy world of online text and to promote this season of reflection and repentance.

The Prayers for Lent 2010 resource launches today, Ash Wednesday, and will be updated each Monday and on special days leading up to Easter Sunday.

The Diocese of Moosonee will hold an Electoral Synod on April 10th, 2010 to elect a successor to Bishop Caleb Lawrence, who retired earlier this year. As we have had a long relationship of prayer and support for one another, I ask your prayers for the people of the diocese as they nominate and elect a new bishop. +Sue

Empty Vessels Enough for All

A day to replenish the soul.

Of special interest to people committed to mission & justice

Camp Geddie, Merigomish, NS

March 20 9am to 4pm

A one day retreat/quiet day, an opportunity to engage in a day of prayer and reflection focusing on our call to love our neighbour, opening people engaged in the work of justice (Empty Vessels) to being filled, renewed spiritually.

This day of common worship and contemplative prayer is an opportunity for an encounter with God, "topping us up" spiritually.

There can be Enough for All when Jesus is present at the banquet, as the water is changed into wine, when we, as servants, are prepared spiritually to help complete the miracle of sharing in God's abundance.

Then, at the end of the day, as a community of people who call for Jubilee, we can eagerly “Go forth in peace to love and serve the Lord!”

The Chapel Choir of the University of King’s College

Presents the

St John Passion

by J S Bach

featuring Ensemble Regale

directed by Paul Halley

Friday, March 19th, 7.30 PM, Lunenburg

Sunday, March 21st, 7:30 PM, Halifax

The Chapel Choir of the University of King's College, under the direction of five-time Grammy winner Paul Halley, will present J S Bach's magnificent St John Passion on Friday, March 19th at St John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, and on Sunday, March 21st – Bach's birthday— at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax.  These performances will feature a line-up of stellar soloists, including Suzie LeBlanc, Sarah Myatt, Andrew Pickett, David Menzies, Martin Auclair and Bruce Fifer, as well as t he chamber orchestra Ensemble Regale, led by David Greenberg.

“The St John Passion is possibly Bach’s most intense and dramatic work.  He was clearly deeply moved by the texts, not only of the Gospel narration, but of the arias, chorales and choruses that comment on the unfolding events of the Passion.  The profound effect of these words on the composer resulted in music of enormous power and poignancy,” explains Paul Halley. The performance will be sung in German in order to retain the immediacy and dramatic impact of the text.

Halley will be conducting the performers from the harpsichord and says that he may make the presentation of the St John Passion an annual event.

Tickets for the Halifax concert can be purchased from the King’s Co-op Bookstore (902.422.1271 ext 261) and cost $35 (priority), $25 (general) and $15 (student). All proceeds from the concert, which is produced by Musique Royale, will be used to support the King’s College Chapel Choir Scholarship Fund. Patron tickets are also available at $75 for those who wish to make a special contribution to the fund; $40 of this amount will be tax-deductible as a charitable donation. Doors open at 6.45.

Tickets for the Lunenburg concert can be purchased from Fulton's Pharmacy in Lunenburg, or by calling 902.634.9994. Adults $25 and students $10 at the door.

Early booking for both concerts is recommended.
