Join the big conversation before the big meeting Anglican Church of Canada February 23, 2010 - General Synod, the national meeting of the Anglican Church of Canada, is a big deal. It happens only once every three years. Over 300 delegates attend. Major decisions are made about the future of the church. General Synod 2010 is set to happen in Halifax, N.S. from June 3 to 11, 2010, and already Canadian Anglicans are kicking off the conversations online. A specialized web forum has been set up for Canadian Anglicans to learn about and discuss the meeting's major topics. Called "Setting Sail: Conversations before General Synod 2010," this forum will feature articles on all the hot topics—Indigenous Ministries, human sexuality, governance changes, and more. "Setting Sail" is only a conversation if you post your comments. So the General Synod Planning Committee invites you to read the articles, which will run every two weeks or so, and then note your thoughts and questions below. This will be a moderated forum that aims to hear a wide range of respectful voices. Already Canon Barbara Burrows, the chair of the General Synod Planning Committee has written an introduction to the General Synod forum. She describes the upcoming meeting in Halifax and introduces the theme, "Feeling the Winds of God: charting a new course." Be part of the prelude to this big meeting. Pray, learn the facts, and add your voice to these General Synod conversations. |

The Chapel Choir of the University of King’s College
Presents the
St John Passion
by J S Bach
featuring Ensemble Regale
directed by Paul Halley
Friday, March 19th, 7.30 PM, Lunenburg
Sunday, March 21st, 7:30 PM, Halifax
The Chapel Choir of the University of King's College, under the direction of five-time Grammy winner Paul Halley, will present J S Bach's magnificent St John Passion on Friday, March 19th at St John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, and on Sunday, March 21st – Bach's birthday— at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax. These performances will feature a line-up of stellar soloists, including Suzie LeBlanc, Sarah Myatt, Andrew Pickett, David Menzies, Martin Auclair and Bruce Fifer, as well as t he chamber orchestra Ensemble Regale, led by David Greenberg.
“The St John Passion is possibly Bach’s most intense and dramatic work. He was clearly deeply moved by the texts, not only of the Gospel narration, but of the arias, chorales and choruses that comment on the unfolding events of the Passion. The profound effect of these words on the composer resulted in music of enormous power and poignancy,” explains Paul Halley. The performance will be sung in German in order to retain the immediacy and dramatic impact of the text.
Halley will be conducting the performers from the harpsichord and says that he may make the presentation of the St John Passion an annual event.
Tickets for the Halifax concert can be purchased from the King’s Co-op Bookstore (902.422.1271 ext 261) and cost $35 (priority), $25 (general) and $15 (student). All proceeds from the concert, which is produced by Musique Royale, will be used to support the King’s College Chapel Choir Scholarship Fund. Patron tickets are also available at $75 for those who wish to make a special contribution to the fund; $40 of this amount will be tax-deductible as a charitable donation. Doors open at 6.45.
