FROM THE BISHOPS' OFFICE:

For Lent, pray at your laptop

Anglican Church of Canada

February 17, 2010 - For Lent 2010, the Anglican Church of Canada is offering a simple online prayer space that will be updated throughout the season. The prayers are drawn from the Anglican Church of Canada's own prayer books, as well as those from ecumenical and full communion partners. They are paired with striking landscapes from around the world.

The intention is to offer a visual pause in the busy world of online text and to promote this season of reflection and repentance.

The Prayers for Lent 2010 resource launches today, Ash Wednesday, and will be updated each Monday and on special days leading up to Easter Sunday.

Prayer Request

The Diocese of Moosonee will hold an Electoral Synod on April 10th, 2010 to elect a successor to Bishop Caleb Lawrence, who retired earlier this year. As we have had a long relationship of prayer and support for one another, I ask your prayers for the people of the diocese as they nominate and elect a new bishop. +Sue

St John Passion

featuring Ensemble Regale

directed by Paul Halley

Friday, March 19th, 7.30 PM, Lunenburg

Sunday, March 21st, 7:30 PM, Halifax

The Chapel Choir of the University of King's College, under the direction of five-time Grammy winner Paul Halley, will present J S Bach's magnificent St John Passion on Friday, March 19th at St John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, and on Sunday, March 21st – Bach's birthday— at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax.  These performances will feature a line-up of stellar soloists, including Suzie LeBlanc, Sarah Myatt, Andrew Pickett, David Menzies, Martin Auclair and Bruce Fifer, as well as t he chamber orchestra Ensemble Regale, led by David Greenberg.

“The St John Passion is possibly Bach’s most intense and dramatic work.  He was clearly deeply moved by the texts, not only of the Gospel narration, but of the arias, chorales and choruses that comment on the unfolding events of the Passion.  The profound effect of these words on the composer resulted in music of enormous power and poignancy,” explains Paul Halley. The performance will be sung in German in order to retain the immediacy and dramatic impact of the text.

Halley will be conducting the performers from the harpsichord and says that he may make the presentation of the St John Passion an annual event.

Tickets for the Halifax concert can be purchased from the King’s Co-op Bookstore (902.422.1271 ext 261) and cost $35 (priority), $25 (general) and $15 (student). SOCIAL JUSTICE

KAIROS is truly grateful for the consistent and determined support of a great many individuals and organisations across Canada and around the world in the face of the turbulence associated with the CIDA cuts. KAIROS continues to steadfastly pursue avenues of opening communication and dialogue with Minister Bev Oda in order to negotiate a return of the funding so needed to support our global partners.

In the meantime, we’re getting our work back on track and we’re very pleased to offer you this resource for free download or print ordering:

KAIROS invites you to participate in a Carbon Fast for Lent. This year we’ve created a resource that offers suggestions on how to celebrate this holy season—a time to reflect on what fasting is all about and on how we can reduce our personal carbon footprint and advocate for social change.  This is part of our on-going Re-Energize campaign.

Our Spiritual Journey
Rev. Henry Sharam is giving a ten week course course at Senior's Collage
room 208 at the Bloomfield Centre

All of us are seekers on a spiritual journey. This course will focus on
this journey with help from Dr. Carl Jung’s psychology. We will be
interested in some of the major issues which profoundly influence our
spirituality, issues which seldom effect young people but arise
primarily in the second half of life, Personality type and styles of
religious leadership, disturbing or revealing dreams, Journal keeping,
Dealing with grief and loss, guilt and sin, projection and our personal
shadow, and others. Our aim is to help you find more of what you are
seeking. Student’s questions will be taken seriously. You need to bring
writing materials.  All interested seekers are welcome.

Grief Group
For anyone struggling with the painful reality of grief, Rev. Henry
Sharam is leading a six week grief group at the Bedford Baptist Church.
It will be held in the Heffler Room from 10 – 11:30 on Friday mornings
starting Feb 5. Grief is a universal phenomenon which we all deal with
from loosing our favorite toy in childhood to loosing a child, loved
parent or partner in adulthood. In the group Rev. Sharam will introduce
a model of crisis and its resolution. People will be invited to share as
much as they wish of their own story.
