Prayer Request

The Diocese of Moosonee will hold an Electoral Synod on April 10th, 2010 to elect a successor to Bishop Caleb Lawrence, who retired earlier this year. As we have had a long relationship of prayer and support for one another, I ask your prayers for the people of the diocese as they nominate and elect a new bishop. +Sue

Our speaker will be the Right Rev’d Gordon Light, retired, former bishop of Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior. Gordon has also served as a parish priest, and as Principal Secretary to former Primate, Michael Peers. ORGANIST- CHOIR DIRECTOR

The Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit, Dartmouth, is accepting applications for the position of organist - choir director. This is a part time position providing music at the 10:00 AM Sunday services and weekly choir practices.  Musical services are also required at special events and festivals.  A full job description will be provided on request.

REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION:

The completion of a degree program in music or participation in a post secondary program in music is desirable.  Prior experience in providing music for Sunday services is an asset, as is familiarity with Anglican liturgy.

The applicant must demonstrate a high degree of talent and skill in the operation of the church organ and piano as well as leadership abilities in directing the choir.

The applicant must demonstrate communication skills required to participate in discussions with the Rector, Spiritual Development Committee, and the Choir in the weekly selection and delivery of music.

This is a position of trust and the applicant must be aware of and comply with the Bishop’s guidelines on sexual misconduct.

SYNOD OFFICE NOTICES:

January 2010-Payroll and Allotment Advice Form. (sent 10 days ago).

This advice form contained an error; the Allotment request was the 2009 Allotment amount. You have previously (Treasurer’s package) received the 2010 Parish Allotment Information Sheet –and most Treasurer’s have paid the 2010 amount shown thereon.

Your Parish Allotment account was posted with the proper amount. If you have paid the 2009 amount for January 2010, please then just adjust your February remittance.

PWRDF

Please DO NOT send your Haiti Relief donations to the Synod Office!  Parishes who have received donations for the PWRDF for Haiti, please make sure you send these TODAY to PWDRF Toronto, in order to receive the matching funds from the government. Some parishes only send their PWRDF donations once a year, but in this case the funds must be sent NOW. The deadline for matching funds to be received by the PWRDF in Toronto is this Friday, February 12th! 

All PWRDF cheques for Haiti received at the Synod Office as of today's mail delivery are being couriered to PWRDF today.

Notice to Members of the Diocesan Group Medical Plan (Medavie Blue Cross) AND Parish Treasurers:

 

On February 2, 2010, the Diocesan Administration and Finance Committee approved renewal of the Medavie Blue Cross Plan for the period of March 1, 2010 to August 31, 2011. 

 

On the recommendation of the Human Resources Advisory Subcommittee, A&F approved Option A that was favoured by 84.7% of those who responded to the Medical Plan survey.  Option A was to keep all the existing plan benefits and accept an 8% premium increase.

Those members who submit monthly premiums payments by post-dated cheque will receive a letter later this month requesting one cheque for the month of February 2010 and then monthly cheques for the months of March 2010 to August 2011 (inclusive).  In the future, the annual renewal date of the Plan will be September 1st.

DIOCESAN ARCHIVES COMMITTEE 2010 PROJECT

 

The Diocesan Archives Committee’s project for the year 2010 is to create a Parish Heritage Mailing List of contact persons from each parish, each representing a Parish Heritage Committee or group. Ideally, this would be a contact person, not just for the year 2010, but also for years to come, and the list would be updated on an ongoing basis.

We ask the clergy and wardens to place this on their Annual General Meeting Agenda for 2010 to identify a “Heritage Contact” and encourage the formation of a “Heritage Committee”, if one does not already exist.

 

The annual Parish Information form will have a place to include this contact information, or you may send updates at any time to:

The centre-piece of this vocal recital will be the Pulitzer-prize-winning song cycle by Dominick Argento, “From the Diary of Virginia Woolf.” While not a religious figure, Woolf has been of interest to scholars of religion over recent years because of her probing of the themes of embodiment, suffering, and death.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at the Cathedral Church of All Saints

On Tuesday, February 16 from 5-7pm please join us for our annual pancake supper in Binney Hall – 5732 College Street Halifax.  Beans, rolls, sausages, pancakes, juice, tea & coffee followed by a yummy dessert. $2..50 for children $5.00 for adults.  Children under 5 eat free!  For further information, please call 423-6002.

Final Fling party at St George's Round Church

Prepare for the season of Lent New Orleans-style! All proceeds and free-will offerings from this Luncheon will be used to assist Reagan Bengcang, a 25 year old Filipino Seafarer who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, who is in need of extensive medical treatment.

OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST:

St. John's United Church, Halifax is hosting its monthly Taize Prayer at St. Matthias Anglican Church, Chebucto Rd., Halifax on Sunday, February 7th - 7 p.m. We welcome you to join us for this evening of songs, readings, prayer and meditation.

A Unit in Clinical Pastoral Education is being offered at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in conjunction with the Institute of Pastoral Training and the Canadian Association of Pastoral Practice and Education.  The theme of our Summer program is:

“Come Ceilidh With Us”  -- Celtic Clinical Pastoral Education

Date: May 17, 2010 – July 30, 2010 (inclusive)

(five days per week)

Students may take this course for academic credit through Atlantic School of Theology or Acadia Divinity College.  It is a Masters level course and can also be transferred as a Bachelor’s Credit from Acadia University.

Our Spiritual Journey
Rev. Henry Sharam is giving a ten week course course at Senior's Collage
room 208 at the Bloomfield Centre

All of us are seekers on a spiritual journey. This course will focus on
this journey with help from Dr. Carl Jung’s psychology. We will be
interested in some of the major issues which profoundly influence our
spirituality, issues which seldom effect young people but arise
primarily in the second half of life, Personality type and styles of
religious leadership, disturbing or revealing dreams, Journal keeping,
Dealing with grief and loss, guilt and sin, projection and our personal
shadow, and others. Our aim is to help you find more of what you are
seeking. Student’s questions will be taken seriously. You need to bring
writing materials.  All interested seekers are welcome.

Grief Group
For anyone struggling with the painful reality of grief, Rev. Henry
Sharam is leading a six week grief group at the Bedford Baptist Church.
It will be held in the Heffler Room from 10 – 11:30 on Friday mornings
starting Feb 5. Grief is a universal phenomenon which we all deal with
from loosing our favorite toy in childhood to loosing a child, loved
parent or partner in adulthood. In the group Rev. Sharam will introduce
a model of crisis and its resolution. People will be invited to share as
much as they wish of their own story.
