Treasurers should have received the 2010 Treasurers Handbook by now-accompanying the Handbook was a sheet “Parish 2009 Allotment Information Sheet”-Calculation of 2010 Allotment. The sheet is a result of the ongoing Budget Calculations/Assessable Income. This sheet contained an error in typing ; it showed the Approved Allotment Rate as 18.00%. The Approved Allotment rate is 19.25% and the correct value was used in all calculations. The Parish Total and Monthly Allotment amounts are correct.
Attention Church/Parish Wardens and Parish Clergy
DIOCESAN ARCHIVES COMMITTEE 2010 PROJECT
The Diocesan Archives Committee’s project for the year 2010 is to create a Parish Heritage Mailing List of contact persons from each parish, each representing a Parish Heritage Committee or group. Ideally, this would be a contact person, not just for the year 2010, but also for years to come, and the list would be updated on an ongoing basis.
We ask the clergy and wardens to place this on their Annual General Meeting Agenda for 2010 to identify a “Heritage Contact” and encourage the formation of a “Heritage Committee”, if one does not already exist.
The annual Parish Information form will have a place to include this contact information, or you may send updates at any time to:
Lorraine Slopek, Diocesan Archivist
archives@nspeidiocese.ca (email); 902-425-0717 (fax);
or by mail to:
Diocesan Archives, 5732 College Street, Halifax, NS B3H 1X3

A VERY SPECIAL YEAR FOR THE PARISH OF ANNAPOLIS
The year 2010 is a very special one for the Parish of Annapolis and indeed for the whole Diocese. It is during this year that we commemorate 300 years of continuous Anglican worship in this place. Because of events that happened in Annapolis Royal, or Port Royal as it was named before that time, the Diocese in which we now live and worship came into being.
It is hard to imagine what it can have been like for those early people of our Anglican communion. They were few in number. The English were mostly soldiers drafted to fight in an ongoing series of battles far from their homeland. Around them in a land, vast and untamed were a small number of Acadian farmers and the Native peoples, who had hunted and fished here for hundreds of years. Far away in Europe the great powers made treaties and sent troops to enforce their rule and, as always happens, the ordinary people, soldiers, farmers and fishermen were caught in the middle. Money and provisions were scarce, tempers flared easily and there were deceptions, false promises and families divided.... Read the entire article here at: http://nspeidiocese.ca/2010/annapolis.htm
AST is pleased to present the second sacred concert of the 2009/2010 season:
Music at the Ends of the Ages
Messiaen’s The Quartet for the End of Time

Atlantic School of Theology
St. Columba Chapel
634 Francklyn Street
Halifax, NS
Tickets $20 (Seniors $10, Students $5)
Available at the door only (doors open at 7 pm)
The Quartet for the End of Time is one of the master works in the chamber music literature of the 20th Century. First performed on January 15, 1941, in Stalag VIIa in Görlitz, Germany, where Messiaen and his fellow musicians were being held as prisoners of war, the piece reflects the horror and fears of its time. To these realities it responds with an expression of the profound catholic faith that shapes all of Messiaen’s work.
Performed by world-class musicians Laura Veeze (violin), Norm Adams (cello), Eileen Walsh (Clarinet) and Barbara Pritchard (piano)
For further information about the AST Sacred Music Series, please refer to the AST website www.astheology.ns.ca/astarts/Music.html or call the AST Communications Office at 496-7943.

CNIB urges governments to provide fair public funding for accessible library services
Right to Read campaign highlights human rights issue affecting 30,000 Nova Scotians
January 19, 2010 (Halifax, NS) — CNIB is urging Canada’s governments to provide immediate and fair public funding for nationwide accessible library services, or risk compromising the right to read of more than 800,000 Canadians – including 30,000 Nova Scotians with significant vision loss.
For more than 90 years, CNIB has operated Canada’s largest library of braille and accessible audio materials, funded entirely through donations. The charity announced today that it can no longer sustain the $10 million annual operating cost of the service without partnering with governments.
CNIB is urging all Canadians to visit www.cnib.ca/righttoread, where they can send a letter asking the federal and provincial governments to fund accessible library services in their upcoming budgets, and to help spread the word about the campaign.
“Nova Scotians who are blind or partially sighted have the right to read, and the right to a library that provides information in formats they can read,” said Duncan Williams, CNIB’s executive director for the Maritime provinces. “We need Prime Minister Harper and Premier Dexter to partner with us to sustain this lifeline to literacy.”
Some provinces have already committed funding, including Ontario, Alberta and Northwest Territories. However, CNIB says support from the other provinces and federal government is crucial. Nova Scotia has been asked to commit $165,439 to support service delivery in the province.
The campaign brings to light the inequitable approach to library funding in Canada. Whereas regular public libraries are funded by taxpayers, accessible library services for blind and partially sighted Canadians to date have received no such support. Without funding, CNIB warns services could be affected as early as April 2010, with increased wait times among the most immediate impacts.
Meanwhile, less than five per cent of reading material in Canada ever makes it into accessible formats like braille or audio – and much of what does is produced through the CNIB Library. Insufficient funding will mean even fewer books can be produced, leaving blind and partially sighted Canadians without access to current titles other readers take for granted.
In fact, Canada is the only G-8 country that does not publicly fund any library services for people with vision loss.
“Disability should not dictate whether the government supports your right to read,” said Williams. “We urge everyone across the province to raise their voices and speak out about this urgent human rights issue.”
In Nova Scotia, 30,000 individuals have significant vision loss that limits their ability to read printed material. These numbers are projected to double by 2032.
For more information, please visit www.cnib.ca/righttoread.

Does theology have a role in shaping a new economy? Are theology and economics two different worlds? Is Capitalism a belief system? What do we owe the future?
Join this live conference via interactive webcast, and respond to leading theologians and economists as they consider these questions. Rowan Williams is the Archbishop of Canterbury; Sir Partha Dasgupta is a Professor of Economics, University of Cambridge; Kathryn Tanner wrote Economy of Grace and teaches at the Chicago Divinity School; Bernard Ntahoturi is the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Burundi. Each speaker will talk, followed by responses from the other speakers, and then any audience questions (including ours).
