NET NEWS-Treasurers should have received the 2010 Treasurers Handbook by now-accompanying the Handbook was a sheet “Parish 2009 Allotment Information Sheet”-Calculation of 2010 Allotment. The sheet is a result of the ongoing Budget Calculations/Assessable Income. This sheet contained an error in typing ; it showed the Approved Allotment Rate as 18.00%. The Approved Allotment rate is 19.25% and the correct value was used in all calculations. The Parish Total and Monthly Allotment amounts are correct.
Attention Church/Parish Wardens and Parish Clergy
DIOCESAN ARCHIVES COMMITTEE 2010 PROJECT
The Diocesan Archives Committee’s project for the year 2010 is to create a Parish Heritage Mailing List of contact persons from each parish, each representing a Parish Heritage Committee or group. Ideally, this would be a contact person, not just for the year 2010, but also for years to come, and the list would be updated on an ongoing basis.
We ask the clergy and wardens to place this on their Annual General Meeting Agenda for 2010 to identify a “Heritage Contact” and encourage the formation of a “Heritage Committee”, if one does not already exist.
The annual Parish Information form will have a place to include this contact information, or you may send updates at any time to:
Lorraine Slopek, Diocesan Archivist
archives@nspeidiocese.ca (email); 902-425-0717 (fax);
or by mail to:
Diocesan Archives, 5732 College Street, Halifax, NS B3H 1X3
Thank you for your participation in this project and for your diligence in keeping your church records continuous and safe.
On Saturday, February 6th, youth, youth leaders and anyone interested in youth ministry are invited to gather together in Binney Hall at the Diocesan Centre to help develop a plan for youth ministry within our Diocese. If you are able to attend, RSVP by January 24th to Susan Naylor at youth@nspeidiocese.ca. All are welcome! (Storm date - February 13th)
The day will begin with gathering activities (and coffee!) at 9:30 for a 10:00 a.m. start. Lunch is included and will finish at 3:00 p.m.

A VERY SPECIAL YEAR FOR THE PARISH OF ANNAPOLIS
The year 2010 is a very special one for the Parish of Annapolis and indeed for the whole Diocese. It is during this year that we commemorate 300 years of continuous Anglican worship in this place. Because of events that happened in Annapolis Royal, or Port Royal as it was named before that time, the Diocese in which we now live and worship came into being.
It is hard to imagine what it can have been like for those early people of our Anglican communion. They were few in number. The English were mostly soldiers drafted to fight in an ongoing series of battles far from their homeland. Around them in a land, vast and untamed were a small number of Acadian farmers and the Native peoples, who had hunted and fished here for hundreds of years. Far away in Europe the great powers made treaties and sent troops to enforce their rule and, as always happens, the ordinary people, soldiers, farmers and fishermen were caught in the middle. Money and provisions were scarce, tempers flared easily and there were deceptions, false promises and families divided.... Read the entire article here at: http://nspeidiocese.ca/2010/annapolis.htm
Celebration of a New Ministry
The Rev. Steve Laskey will be installed as rector of Christ Church, Dartmouth this Sunday, January 17th at 7pm. Everyone is invited to attend. Clergy and lay readers are invited to robe (alb and stole). The liturgical colour is white. Christ Church is at the corner of Ochterloney and Wentworth in Dartmouth.
AST is pleased to present the second sacred concert of the 2009/2010 season:
Music at the Ends of the Ages
Messiaen’s The Quartet for the End of Time

Atlantic School of Theology
St. Columba Chapel
634 Francklyn Street
Halifax, NS
Tickets $20 (Seniors $10, Students $5)
Available at the door only (doors open at 7 pm)
The Quartet for the End of Time is one of the master works in the chamber music literature of the 20th Century. First performed on January 15, 1941, in Stalag VIIa in Görlitz, Germany, where Messiaen and his fellow musicians were being held as prisoners of war, the piece reflects the horror and fears of its time. To these realities it responds with an expression of the profound catholic faith that shapes all of Messiaen’s work.
Performed by world-class musicians Laura Veeze (violin), Norm Adams (cello), Eileen Walsh (Clarinet) and Barbara Pritchard (piano)
For further information about the AST Sacred Music Series, please refer to the AST website www.astheology.ns.ca/astarts/Music.html or call the AST Communications Office at 496-7943.

PWRDF responds to massive destruction in Haiti
Action By Churches Together
January 13, 2010 - Hundreds, maybe thousands, of people were buried alive when a major earthquake struck Port-au-Prince, the capital of impoverished Haiti on Tuesday. The magnitude 7.0 quake sent panic-stricken people into the streets. Offices, hotels, houses and shops collapsed, and people were screaming "Jesus, Jesus", not knowing where to run. The presidential palace lay in ruins, and many churches have been destroyed. Members of ACT Alliance are already in place, assisting those affected by the earthquake. The ACT Secretariat in Geneva is coordinating the relief operations of its members, and more details will follow in the coming hours.
Massive destruction
The city is without electricity, the telephone network has broken down. The UN headquarter has collapsed. People are sitting in the streets with nowhere to go. The office of ACT member Christian Aid was destroyed, but staff were unharmed and are now responding to the emergency.
John Nduna, the General Secretary of ACT Alliance expresses condolences with the affected families and with UN and other organizations that have lost their people in the buildings.
World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, also expresses condolences and solidarity with the people of Haiti. "Once again they have experienced the great burdens of anguish, damage, and death because of a natural catastrophe. They have already carried many burdens of political instability and poverty," Fykse Tveit says.
Hit again
In 2004 more than 3,000 people died because of Hurricane Jeanne which passed over the northwest city of Gonaives. The same area was hit again in 2008 when four tropical storm systems passed through the region. In 2004 political instability led to the ousting of the President Jean-Baptiste Aristide.

A statement from the Primate on the disaster in Haiti
ARCHBISHOP FRED HILTZ, ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA
January 13, 2010 — Haiti has been devastated by a terrible earthquake. Thousands are feared to have died and many more injured. The people in Haiti have suffered so much in the past 10 years. Hurricane Jeanne ripped through the island in 2004 and in 2008 tropical storms took a huge toll. Now a new disaster. Through the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund, our church has made an initial donation of $15,000 for emergency relief through Action by Churches Together (ACT).
The Anglican Church of Canada and especially the Diocese of Montreal has had a long relationship with the Anglican Church of Haiti, personalized in many respects by Canon Ogé Beauvoir, the dean of the theological seminary in Haiti. A graduate of Montreal Diocesan College, he went to Haiti in 1991 as a Volunteer in Mission. In 1996, he returned to Canada to serve as regional mission coordinator for Africa and the Middle East. He returned to Haiti, where he was born, in 2004. We are grateful to know that he and his wife Serette are safe.
Please pray for the people of Haiti as they struggle with such devastation and grief..
Please remember as well their relative in Canada and the Canadian Haitian community many of whom anxiously await news of friends, relatives and loved ones.
Please give generously to increase our support for relief efforts.
I make this appeal in the name of Christ in his compassion for all who suffer.
+Fred

Building an Ethical Economy – Theology and the Marketplace
Trinity Institute, live from New York City
January 27 - 29; Wed 7pm to Fri 5pm
Tatamagouche Centre
Does theology have a role in shaping a new economy? Are theology and economics two different worlds? Is Capitalism a belief system? What do we owe the future?
Join this live conference via interactive webcast, and respond to leading theologians and economists as they consider these questions. Rowan Williams is the Archbishop of Canterbury; Sir Partha Dasgupta is a Professor of Economics, University of Cambridge; Kathryn Tanner wrote Economy of Grace and teaches at the Chicago Divinity School; Bernard Ntahoturi is the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Burundi. Each speaker will talk, followed by responses from the other speakers, and then any audience questions (including ours). Then, we will participate in our own facilitated reflections, with local leadership by Dr. David Deane. Dr. Deane teaches at the Atlantic School of Theology, and is presently working on a book "The Matter of the Spirit" which looks at Capitalism through a Pneumatological lens.
A compelling learning opportunity, and stimulating occasion to engage collegially in comfortable, supportive surroundings. Tatamagouche Centre is the regional partner of the Trinity Institute. See www.trinitywallstreet.org for more conference details.
Pre-conference DVD, featuring interviews with the speakers, is available to borrow through Tatamagouche Centre.
For more information, or to register, please contact Tatamagouche Centre at 1-800-218-2220 or www.tatacentre.ca.
