Seeking a Musical Director/Organist
St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Lower Sackville is seeking an enthusiastic musical director. Our parish vision is to broaden our music ministry to include contemporary and traditional music. We have two services with music: a contemporary Eucharist with our youth group and Sunday School at 9:15 in the Parish Hall and a more formal Eucharist with a small choir in the church at 11:00 am. Our musical equipment includes a Rodgers Model 441 electric organ in the church and a Roland HP 203 Digital Piano and audio-video facilities in our hall. We welcome applicants who would enjoy the challenge of building a new music program and enriching the current program with new and creative ways of doing music ministry.

A really neat Website
for youth and youth leaders
Just generation is the official youth website of the Primates World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF). It is a site for Christian youth (16-30) who want to get active in the struggle for just development and is made up of youth and young adults from across Canada.
Here is a site packed with great information, resources, articles, and news reports related to local and global social and eco justice issues. There are suggestions and opportunities to get young people involved and this site is updated often.
And that's not all... via a link from the site, youth can access a weekly pod cast"The Looking Glass" -- 30-minutes of faith filled justice-talk and new tunes. It engages with artists, thinkers, theologians, musicians, and local and global activists concerning issues of development, justice, peace, the environment, pop culture and Christian spirituality.
Consultation 2009 survey
What Do We Seek?
Say What You Think About Finances and Ministry in our Diocese
How should we use money?
Last June, Diocesan Council discussed allotment rate and other financial factors, and made cuts of about $100,000 in ministry from the 2010 diocesan budget.
Council has asked for input from Anglicans all over the Diocese before thinking about budgets and ministry for 2011 and beyond.
Your opportunity to have a say as an active Anglican comes in the form of a survey. You can comment on the importance of the various central ministries, and offer suggestions. Your Rector or Priest-in-Charge will have copies, or print one out here: [pdf] [Word].
The deadline is December 31st, 2009.

7:00 pm
Free Will Offering
Atlantic School of Theology is pleased to announce a series of concerts celebrating sacred music. The 2009/10 season features outstanding professional musicians from the region and beyond. As a leader in theological education, AST will be exploring the ways in which music and faith inform and enrich each other. Offering a new dimension in arts programming, each performance will reflect on themes of importance to religious thought and focus on the important but often unnoticed ways in which the arts and religious traditions intersect to contribute to and enrich our lives.
All performances take place on campus in the St. Columba Chapel, a venue that provides a wonderful acoustical experience in a warm and intimate environment.
The Mass for Organ--Friday, November 20--8:00 pm
The organ is well known today in its role in church music. The wider role of the organ still has roots in church music. This concert will explore, through the work of Haydn and Mozart, the close connection between the sacred and secular roles of the organ.
This first concert in the series features performances by the Chapel Choir of the University of King’s College, with Paul Halley, Organist and Director, and musicians from Symphony Nova Scotia. View the promotional poster online: http://www.astheology.ns.ca/UpcomingEvents.html.
Music at the Ends of the Ages--Tuesday, January 26--7:30 pm
The Quartet for the End of Time is one of the master works in the chamber music literature of the 20th Century. First performed on January 15, 1941, in Stalag VIIa in Görlitz, Germany, where Messiaen and his fellow musicians were being held as prisoners of war, the piece reflects the horror and fears of its time. To these realities it responds with an expression of the profound catholic faith that shapes all of Messiaen’s work.
Songs of Life and Death--Tuesday, February 16--7:30 pm
The centre-piece of this vocal recital will be the Pulitzer prize winning song cycle by Dominick Argento, “From the Diary of Virginia Woolf.” While not a religious figure, Woolf has been of interest to scholars of religion over recent years because of her probing of the themes of embodiment, suffering, and death.
The Inspiring Hymn--Tuesday, March 23--7:30 pm
For English composers of the 20th Century, the attempt to shape a genuinely English school of composition involved a reaching back into the period before England was described as a land without music. Especially important were the folk traditions of the British Isles, the polyphony of the Tudor period, and the work of Henry Purcell. Not surprisingly, sacred music, including hymnody, was an essential element of this extraordinarily rich period. This concert explores the impact of hymnody as a source for instrumental music by English composers in the mid 20th Century.
Tickets are available at the door 30 minutes prior to performances, and are available at very reasonable prices: adults $20, seniors $10, and students $5.

God is a Giver...Therefore we are Givers
We are made in the image of God. He is generous, therefore we are generous. This must be why it feels so good to be helpful and do nice things for others. When we are giving, we are reflecting the likeness of God. It is our basic nature to give of ourselves. The act of clinging to, worrying about, and protecting our worldly things is actually a very restricting and suffocating way to live. Sir Winston Churchill said it this way, "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give."

Justice in Your Cup- A Coffee Producer’s Perspective
Come watch a new film about Guatemala entitled Madre Tierra, and hear from a Guatemalan coffee producer about the struggles and successes of fair trade.
WHEN?
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 7-8:30 pm, Just Us! Spring Garden Coffeehouse, 5896 Spring Garden Road, Halifax
Thursday, November 19, 2009 5-6:30 pm, Just Us! Wolfville Coffeehouse, 450 Main Street, Wolfville
WHO?
Mr. Herlindo Hernandez Pu is a coffee and macadamia nut farmer from the San Salvador Xolwitz cooperative in Retalhuleu, Guatemala. He is with the Campesino Committee of the Highlands (CCDA) in Guatemala.
WHAT?
A new film, Madre Tierra, highlights the work of the CCDA
For centuries, the distribution of land has been at the centre of Guatemala's violent story. Guatemala has the worst land distribution in the Americas, and campesino farmers struggling to feed their families are facing greater obstacles to gaining access to a plot of land. "Madre Tierra" follows one campesino organization, the Campesino Committee of the highlands (CCDA), as they push for getting land into the hands of campesino families.
