Seeking a Musical Director/Organist

St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Lower Sackville is seeking an enthusiastic musical director.  Our parish vision is to broaden our music ministry to include contemporary and traditional music.  We have two services with music: a contemporary Eucharist with our youth group and Sunday School at 9:15 in the Parish Hall and a more formal Eucharist with a small choir in the church at 11:00 am. Our musical equipment includes a Rodgers Model 441 electric organ in the church and a Roland HP 203 Digital Piano and audio-video facilities in our hall. We welcome applicants who would enjoy the challenge of building a new music program and enriching the current program with new and creative ways of doing music ministry.

YOUTH STUFF

http://justgeneration.ca/sites/default/files/images/50Leaders-Logo.thumbnail.jpg As the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund celebrates its 50th anniversary, the 50 Leaders program will work with fifty young (aged 16-30) Anglicans in Canada to discern and develop the gifts that the Spirit has given them.  Developing Christian leaders involves not just learning, but prayer, Bible study, and experience of the ministry of God’s people in the world.  50 Leaders will provide opportunities for all of these facets of leadership development.

By transforming participants’ gifts and passions into positive action, these leaders will be advocates and champions for PWRDF and justice in their communities throughout their time in the 50 Leaders program and into the future.  Through their ministry, they will bring new inspiration to the Anglican Church of Canada by helping Canadian Anglicans to live out the gospel call to bear witness to God's healing love in a broken world.

The deadline to apply is TODAY September 30th.  For more information and application forms go to: http://justgeneration.ca/node/276

Anglican Church Women of Nova Scotia

"FAITH IN ACTION;

HOPE ON THE HORIZON"

When Anglican Church Women of Nova Scotia held their Annual Meeting in April 2009 at the Diocesan Centre in Halifax, it was time to choose an annual project for the current year. Traditionally there is a rotation of an "at home" project (e.g. Funding for Interpreters of the Deaf), a "Canadian" project (e.g. support for the rebuilding of the St. Jude’s Cathedral, Diocese of the Arctic), and an "international" project (such as last year’s raising funds to supporting high school education for Girls in the Central American country of Belize). For the year 2009 we were to chose an "at home" project.

Last February newspaper articles, including a moving editorial in The Chronicle Herald, and television news items brought to our attention the funding crisis for a youth centre in Eskasoni, Cape Breton Island. Eskasoni is the largest First Nation community east of Montreal with a population of 3,800 people, in which over 50% of the population is under the age of 21. The recent suicides and drug related deaths have devastated the close knit community and the surrounding First Nation communities on Cape Breton Island, known as Unamaki.

The Herald’s editorial stated, in part..... "At least four young people on Cape Breton’s Eskasoni reserve have killed themselves since the middle of December.

Meanwhile, a new youth crisis shelter - only completed six months ago - in the reserve’s health centre sits empty and unused. The problem? The band cannot find funding to operate the facility, which also has rooms - but no beds - for overnight guests. Youth considered a suicide risk are now taken to facilities in Sydney, 40 kilometers away and in an unfamiliar setting.

This absurd situation must end, quickly. Social workers who work with Eskasoni youth are blunt about its human costs. If that shelter had been open, they say, some of those lost young lives might well have been saved."

To look into the possibility of this as an ACW project, two NS ACW Board members from Cape Breton, Selma and Elaine, went to see their contact, Sgt. Barry Gordon, and lo and behold he was giving a seminar at the Membertou reserve... to the Native community from all reserves on the Island. Selma and Elaine had the opportunity to meet with several Social Workers (Natives) and explain our proposed offer. The workers were astounded. Sgt. Gordon told them about some of the ACW’s previous projects such as Bearskin Healing Lodge, St. Jude’s Cathedral, Girls in Belize, etc. Selma said that this was certainly "God in Action!", as in seeking out Sgt. Gordon, they found him at the Membertou Convention Centre with all the Social Workers ... just the people Selma and Elaine needed to have all together at one time.

A wonderful PowerPoint presentation was viewed at the ACW’s Annual Meeting, by almost 100 representatives from all over this Diocese, telling of the recent suicides and conditions at Eskasoni. We worked very closely with the social workers at Eskasoni and have a real insight into the problems in that community. ACW delegates agreed that the 2009 Project would be "Faith in Action; Hope on the Horizon" - to raise funds to support programming at the Eskasoni Crisis and Referral Centre (originally called the Eskasoni Youth Shelter). Selma was later interviewed by two radio stations about the project and she issued a challenge to other groups to support the Centre. Several groups, such as The Knights of Columbus, made donations towards furniture, etc. Local publicity in Cape Breton has helped with pressure on Government agencies to provide funding to enable the centre to be opened and maintained with staff. Funds raised by Anglican Church Women will be for "PROGRAMS ONLY" to help in this situation.

The Nova Scotia Board of Anglican Church Women invites each ACW parish to try to contribute at least $75.00 to this project. For parishes that have amalgamated with 2, 3 or more ACW’s having come together as one, creates a bit of loss for our projects, so if they wish to contribute more than $75.00, that would be most generous. By the same token, if you are not able to raise $75.00, then any amount that you can afford is very acceptable and most welcome. Please send cheque or money order to: 2009 ACW Project, N.S. Anglican Church Women, Room 100, 5732 College Street, Halifax, N.S. B3H 1X3. Please make cheque payable to "NS ACW Board", and indicate "Project 2009" on cheque.

Thank you for your continued support of our annual projects; they all prove to be worthy and so needed. We must NEVER forget to thank God for giving us the ability to minister to others.

A VERY SPECIAL 2010 CALENDAR

There're almost gone! The Anglican Church Women of Nova Scotia will have for sale a very special 2010 Church Calendar, celebrating the 300th Anniversary of continuous Anglican worship in our Diocese. As it will feature pictures of 12 churches in our Diocese, it is anticipated that it will be a keepsake item. The calendar is produced by the 2010 Committee as part of the 2010 celebrations.

For groups wishing to sell these 2010 Church Calendars as a fund raising project in their parish, now is the time to place an order. For more information please contact the ACW Calendar Chairperson, Anna Langille, at (902) 423-8697, or write to Anna at the ACW Room, Diocesan Centre, 5732 College Street, Halifax, NS B3H 1X3. Order forms were distributed at the Annual Meeting and are also included in the Summer issue of the ACW Newsletter, "Keeping In Touch....". Please get your order with payment in to the office early because Anna believes they will go very quickly. There will be a limited printing, and once they are gone, they’re gone! (It is expected that for 2011 the ACW will once again be offering "The Canadian Church Calendar" as they have done in previous years.)

Thank you to everyone who last year delivered the church calendars to branches and drop-off areas across Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Hand Delivery is the best way to go! Mailing is very costly and postage seems to always be going up.

Volunteer at the Mission and See the World

We are looking for people who would like to become volunteers at the Mission to Seafarers. There are a wide variety of tasks that needs to be done. You will be trained in all aspects of the work at the Mission, and we will support you in the tasks that most interest you.

Using the Mission Van, is one of those tasks; you will be trained in ship visiting: this entails visiting the crew on their ships, and transports to the Mission and shopping, providing phone cards or maybe just talking to a seafarer who has not seen a fresh face in many weeks.

Errands are another task, which may include: banking, shopping, picking up used clothing or books, and later in the year, picking up shoe boxes for our Christmas Shoebox Campaign.

Counter Work: this may be something you enjoy.  We have a canteen and souvenir shop.

We are asking that volunteers are able to work one 4 hour shift per week. If you are interested and have any questions, please contact Dorothy at 456-1658 or Maggie at 456-7029. We are open from 9am-10pm Monday-Friday and 10am-10pm Saturday and Sunday; so please feel free to drop by to look around. We would be very interested in speaking with you and discussing the tasks that most interest you.

STEWARDSHIP:

Looking for New Stewardship Initiatives? Primate’s World Relief & Development Fund- PWRDF

Last Sunday The Church of Saint Andrew in Cole Harbour was visited by Bruce Moxley who spoke about the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund. Did you know this is the 50th Anniversary of the fund and that it originated as a way to assist those affected by the Springhill Nova Scotia mining disaster.  PWRDF offers an excellent website with many stories of success, hundreds of examples of the work of the fund and many ways to contribute. In recognition of last Sunday’s visit our Mother’s Union hosted a hot dog and cookie lunch. Mr Moxley challenged our congregation to consider sponsoring another refugee family and come up with other innovative ways to support the fund. Since our Primate is from our own Diocese, our support of this fund is an excellent way to honour the work of Archbishop Fred Hiltz and an terrific use of our stewardship energy. Have a look at the website www.pwrdf.org

How Readest Thou? Jesus asks. “The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society” is a delightful, poignant and moving fictional account of, well, a literary society established during the German occupation of the Isle of Guernsey. Other books to be considered in relation to this are “Proust and the Squid” by Maryanne Wolfe, “A History of Reading” by Alberto Manguel, and “The Diviners” by Margaret Laurence.

Anglican Journal News: PWRDF accepting donations for Philippines flood victims

MARITES N. SISON
STAFF WRITER

Sep 29, 2009
The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) is releasing an
initial grant of $15,000 and is accepting donations to help tens of
thousands of families who were affected by a devastating tropical storm
that flooded 80 per cent of the Philippines' capital, Metro Manila, and
its neighbouring areas.

More than 240 people have been reported killed and more than 450,000
driven from their homes after tropical storm Ketsana (locally known as
"Ondoy") dumped a month's worth of rainfall in six hours on Sept. 26,
said Action by Churches Together (ACT) International. ACT is a coalition
of church-based groups that responds to natural disasters and
humanitarian crises, of which PWRDF, the Anglican Church of Canada's
relief and development arm, is a member.

There are fears that the number of victims will rise as a second
tropical cyclone is forming that may affect the same areas that are
still reeling from Ketsana.

To read the full story, please visit the Anglican Journal website,
