Vision 2019: Immediate action required
From: Anglican Church of Canada [webmanager@national.anglican.ca]
September 04, 2009 - Canadian Anglicans have until Oct. 1 to submit responses to Vision 2019. Why not join with other parishes in marking Sept. 13 as Vision 2019 Sunday, and use that day to gather as many responses as you can?
Vision 2019 is a church-wide exercise to discern where God wants the Anglican Church of Canada to be in 2019. All voices are welcome, and results will be shared at the next national meeting, General Synod 2010.
It's easy for your church to mark Sept. 13 as Vision 2019 Sunday. Resources are available on the website, or it can be as simple as having parishioners jot down a prayer during the Prayers of the People, as the Rev. Dan Graves did with his parish.< br />
The Vision 2019 team happily receives responses by

| Anglican Church Women of Nova Scotia
"FAITH IN ACTION; HOPE ON THE HORIZON" When Anglican Church Women of Nova Scotia held their Annual Meeting in April 2009 at the Diocesan Centre in Halifax, it was time to choose an annual project for the current year. Traditionally there is a rotation of an "at home" project (e.g. Funding for Interpreters of the Deaf), a "Canadian" project (e.g. support for the rebuilding of the St. Jude’s Cathedral, Diocese of the Arctic), and an "international" project (such as last year’s raising funds to supporting high school education for Girls in the Central American country of Belize). For the year 2009 we were to chose an "at home" project. Last February newspaper articles, including a moving editorial in The Chronicle Herald, and television news items brought to our attention the funding crisis for a youth centre in Eskasoni, Cape Breton Island. Eskasoni is the largest First Nation community east of Montreal with a population of 3,800 people, in which over 50% of the population is under the age of 21. The recent suicides and drug related deaths have devastated the close knit community and the surrounding First Nation communities on Cape Breton Island, known as Unamaki. The Herald’s editorial stated, in part..... "At least four young people on Cape Breton’s Eskasoni reserve have killed themselves since the middle of December. Meanwhile, a new youth crisis shelter - only completed six months ago - in the reserve’s health centre sits empty and unused. The problem? The band cannot find funding to operate the facility, which also has rooms - but no beds - for overnight guests. Youth considered a suicide risk are now taken to facilities in Sydney, 40 kilometers away and in an unfamiliar setting. This absurd situation must end, quickly. Social workers who work with Eskasoni youth are blunt about its human costs. If that shelter had been open, they say, some of those lost young lives might well have been saved." To look into the possibility of this as an ACW project, two NS ACW Board members from Cape Breton, Selma and Elaine, went to see their contact, Sgt. Barry Gordon, and lo and behold he was giving a seminar at the Membertou reserve... to the Native community from all reserves on the Island. Selma and Elaine had the opportunity to meet with several Social Workers (Natives) and explain our proposed offer. The workers were astounded. Sgt. Gordon told them about some of the ACW’s previous projects such as Bearskin Healing Lodge, St. Jude’s Cathedral, Girls in Belize, etc. Selma said that this was certainly "God in Action!", as in seeking out Sgt. Gordon, they found him at the Membertou Convention Centre with all the Social Workers ... just the people Selma and Elaine needed to have all together at one time. A wonderful PowerPoint presentation was viewed at the ACW’s Annual Meeting, by almost 100 representatives from all over this Diocese, telling of the recent suicides and conditions at Eskasoni. We worked very closely with the social workers at Eskasoni and have a real insight into the problems in that community. ACW delegates agreed that the 2009 Project would be "Faith in Action; Hope on the Horizon" - to raise funds to support programming at the Eskasoni Crisis and Referral Centre (originally called the Eskasoni Youth Shelter). Selma was later interviewed by two radio stations about the project and she issued a challenge to other groups to support the Centre. Several groups, such as The Knights of Columbus, made donations towards furniture, etc. Local publicity in Cape Breton has helped with pressure on Government agencies to provide funding to enable the centre to be opened and maintained with staff. Funds raised by Anglican Church Women will be for "PROGRAMS ONLY" to help in this situation. The Nova Scotia Board of Anglican Church Women invites each ACW parish to try to contribute at least $75.00 to this project. For parishes that have amalgamated with 2, 3 or more ACW’s having come together as one, creates a bit of loss for our projects, so if they wish to contribute more than $75.00, that would be most generous. By the same token, if you are not able to raise $75.00, then any amount that you can afford is very acceptable and most welcome. Please send cheque or money order to: 2009 ACW Project, N.S. Anglican Church Women, Room 100, 5732 College Street, Halifax, N.S. B3H 1X3. Please make cheque payable to "NS ACW Board", and indicate "Project 2009" on cheque. Thank you for your continued support of our annual projects; they all prove to be worthy and so needed. We must NEVER forget to thank God for giving us the ability to minister to others. |
A VERY SPECIAL 2010 CALENDAR
The Anglican Church Women of Nova Scotia will have for sale a very special 2010 Church Calendar, celebrating the 300th Anniversary of continuous Anglican worship in our Diocese. As it will feature pictures of 12 churches in our Diocese, it is anticipated that it will be a keepsake item. The calendar is produced by the 2010 Committee as part of the 2010 celebrations.
For groups wishing to sell these 2010 Church Calendars as a fund raising project in their parish, now is the time to place an order. For more information please contact the ACW Calendar Chairperson, Anna Langille, at (902) 423-8697, or write to Anna at the ACW Room, Diocesan Centre, 5732 College Street, Halifax, NS B3H 1X3. Order forms were distributed at the Annual Meeting and are also included in the Summer issue of the ACW Newsletter, "Keeping In Touch....". Please get your order with payment in to the office early because Anna believes they will go very quickly. There will be a limited printing, and once they are gone, they’re gone! (It is expected that for 2011 the ACW will once again be offering "The Canadian Church Calendar" as they have done in previous years.)
Thank you to everyone who last year delivered the church calendars to branches and drop-off areas across Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Hand Delivery is the best way to go! Mailing is very costly and postage seems to always be going up.

Volunteer at the Mission and See the World
We are looking for people who would like to become volunteers at the Mission to Seafarers. There are a wide variety of tasks that needs to be done. You will be trained in all aspects of the work at the Mission, and we will support you in the tasks that most interest you.
Using the Mission Van, is one of those tasks; you will be trained in ship visiting: this entails visiting the crew on their ships, and transports to the Mission and shopping, providing phone cards or maybe just talking to a seafarer who has not seen a fresh face in many weeks.
Errands are another task, which may include: banking, shopping, picking up used clothing or books, and later in the year, picking up shoe boxes for our Christmas Shoebox Campaign.
Counter Work: this may be something you enjoy. We have a canteen and souvenir shop.
We are asking that volunteers are able to work one 4 hour shift per week. If you are interested and have any questions, please contact Dorothy at 456-1658 or Maggie at 456-7029. We are open from 9am-10pm Monday-Friday and 10am-10pm Saturday and Sunday; so please feel free to drop by to look around. We would be very interested in speaking with you and discussing the tasks that most interest you.
On Sunday, September 13, 2009 TEC will be hosting an Open House at the Diocesan Centre on College Street. That's the same place that the TEC weekends are held. It will start at 5 p.m. and go to ... later. We will have pizza and stuff and will be the perfect opportunity to reconnect with your team mates, your table mates and old friends. It is also the perfect time to submit an application for the TEC 16 team. We will also be holding elections for various Steering Committee positions and if you are unable to commit to a weekend, this may be the way for you to stay involved. Also, for those of us who are on the Steering Committee, there will be a short Steering meeting following our get together. Yours in Christ TEC Steering

every day! I am definitely a Christian! I am strong in my faith and I'm a changed
person. I enjoyed the discussions the most. I love the people here. The support for
each other was amazing. The leaders are unbelievable! This course helped me fillthe empty space I felt in my heart with God. All I can say is thank you!"

Essentials Nova Scotia invites you to come to hear about
“The Agape Project”
with guest speakers Rev. David Harris and/or Mr. Michael Edward
The following descriptions taken from other sources may help you understand what will be presented during the morning.
Led by the Rev. David Harris and others, this is a mind-blowing project aimed at communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ, especially to people under 40. Huge effort and expertise are being poured into this project.
This is a new, practical initiative to promote the understanding and exploration of authentically Anglican Christianity in ways that particularly reach, recruit and deploy younger Anglicans across the country through networking and personal encounter.
While promoted and supported by the Federation, the proposed Anglican Project would
operate at arm’s length from it, with an independent board whose membership would reflect the modes, channels and expertise of constituencies such as recent graduates and “Generation X,” melded with the experience of seasoned advisors and regional leaders.
Light lunch and time for fellowship will follow the meeting.

Welcome to September in our Anglican Diocese
September is a month of new beginnings. Many schools, colleges and universities start new academic years. Congregations start some new activities and resume others that are often put on hold during the summer.
How might we make fresh starts as God’s stewards? There are a number of things that we can do to make a difference in our stewardship. We may consider increasing our financial contributions to our church and favorite charities. We may want to volunteer more of our time for helping out in our church and community. We may decide to be more intentional in using our God-given skills and talents in service to benefit others. And the list of ways we can improve our stewardship goes on to include such things as working on our relationships with others, our stewardship of the Gospel [witnessing], proper care for God’s creation and care for our own bodies.
Upcoming Companions on a Journey Events:
· Sept 18/19 Prince Edward Island. Stewardship 101 workshop Sept 18th (7-9PM) & 19th (10AM-3PM) will be held at St. Paul's, Charlottetown and RSVPs must be submitted to Nora at stpauls@pei.aibn.com or 902-892-1691 by this Friday, Sept 11.
· Nov 20/21 Prince Edward Island. Details to be announced.
