Tonya Haislip, who was chosen as Miss Nova Scotia to represent our Province at the Miss Canada International Competition, would like to thank all the A.C.W. groups, and especially Anna Langille, and other groups across the Province who donated teddy bears/stuffed animals for the Teddy Bears for Hope Campaign. Over 1700 were collected. This Competition is not a beauty pageant, but the organization recognizes the delegates' work in the field of social justice, and academic standings. These teddies will be going to Uganda from the children of Canada to children in other parts of the world who are lonely, underprivileged and caught in a web of despair and poverty due to no fault of their own. Last year Tonya attended the Ask & Imagine Program. She is a member of the Parish of Ship Harbour. |

Essentials Nova Scotia invites you to come to hear about
“The Agape Project”
with guest speakers Rev. David Harris and/or Mr. Michael Edward
The following descriptions taken from other sources may help you understand what will be presented during the morning.
Led by the Rev. David Harris and others, this is a mind-blowing project aimed at communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ, especially to people under 40. Huge effort and expertise are being poured into this project.
This is a new, practical initiative to promote the understanding and exploration of authentically Anglican Christianity in ways that particularly reach, recruit and deploy younger Anglicans across the country through networking and personal encounter.
While promoted and supported by the Federation, the proposed Anglican Project would
operate at arm’s length from it, with an independent board whose membership would reflect the modes, channels and expertise of constituencies such as recent graduates and “Generation X,” melded with the experience of seasoned advisors and regional leaders.
Light lunch and time for fellowship will follow the meeting.

Do you know what God is doing in the
new millennium?
("Perspectives is absolutely essential for anyone interested in missions!") GEORGE VERWER, Operation MobilizationWhat is Perspectives?
Perspectives Study Program on the World Christian Movement is a dynamic 15-week discipleship course taught by a variety of veteran missionaries, influential strategists and professors, each an expert in their respective area.
Discover what God is doing around the world and consider your part in His purposes. Perspectives Study Program will help you understand God’s plan for our world – and possibly for your life – as you explore the following topics:
It is Biblical What does God’s Word reveal about His plan?
Discover God’s often overlooked yet unchanging purpose as it’s revealed from Genesis to Revelation.
It is Historical How has God been working throughout history?
You’ll be challenged and encouraged as you learn about the unlikely people and surprising events God has used throughout history in the spread of the Gospel.
It is Cultural How does culture fit in God’s global plan?
Do missionaries destroy or enhance cultures when they plant churches? Learn the keys for communicating the Gospel to people with different world views and cultures.
It is Strategic What role could you and your church play?
What are ‘unreached people groups’ and why are they so important in the completion of God’s eternal purpose?
Perspectives Study Program is for…
… You!

KAIROS urgent action, 13 August 2009
Palestinian activist imprisoned for peaceful protest only months after his return from KAIROS co-sponsored Canadian speaking tour
Summary: Israeli military forces have arrested Mohammed Khatib, a key Palestinian organizer in the West Bank village of Bil’in. Khatib travelled to Canada in June on an eleven-city speaking tour to raise awareness about the situation affecting his hometown of Bil'in and Canada's connection to it. He is being held without charge.
In June the village launched a lawsuit against a Canadian company involved in building Israeli-only settlements on the village’s lands. Bil’in holds peaceful protests as well as non-violent attempts to reach village lands cut off by the Israeli Separation Wall.
Members of Parliament Libby Davies (New Democratic Party), Boris Wrzesnewskyj (Liberal) and Richard Nadeau (Bloc Québécois) were recently on a fact- finding mission to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. They visited Bil’in on August 9.
KAIROS is inviting Canadians to send solidarity messages to the village and alert your Member of Parliament to the situation.
Background
The village of Bil'in in the West Bank, Occupied Palestinian Territories, has held non-violent popular protests against the Israeli barrier wall since 2005. The barrier cuts across village land, and annexes an estimated 60 per cent of Bil'in, according to Israeli lawyer Emily Schaeffer, who is representing the village in an unprecedented lawsuit currently before the Quebec Superior Court.
The village inhabitants oppose a Canadian-Israeli settlement construction project on their lands, which they say is illegal according to international law.
Now, only months after his visit to Canada, Khatib has been arrested. During the early morning hours on Monday August 3, Israeli forces entered Khatib's home in Palestine, and arrested him in front of his wife and children. At present, Mohammed Khatib remains in Israeli custody despite the fact that no charges have been brought against him. He joins an estimated 8,000 Palestinian prisoners currently being detained by Israel authorities.
Protesters say the Israeli military forces have stepped up nighttime raids in the village, targeting key activists involved in protests. “Hundreds of soldiers are entering at night, hiding between the olive trees and houses, where we can barely see them. Masks cover their faces and we can only see their eyes. They shoot teargas and sound bombs and the entire village is awake, several times a week”, noted one resident.
"Mohammed Khatib along with other leaders of the Palestinian popular struggle are being targeted because they mobilize Palestinians to resist non-violently," says Abdullah Abu Rahme, co-ordinator of Bil'in's Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements. “The wall and settlements built on occupied Palestinian land are illegal under international law. In the case of this village, even the Israeli court declared the [wall] route illegal.”
According to the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine, in the past month alone, the Israeli military has arrested 19 Palestinian activists in nighttime arrests. The majority of those arrested remain in prison. In recent weeks, Bil'in villagers have marched in the early mornings to raise awareness internationally about the nighttime raids and arrests.
(Mohammed Al-Khatib visiting Montreal in June 2009. Source: http://palestinethinktank.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/khatib.jpg)
Canadian connection
In June 2009, Mohammed Khatib traveled to Canada for the preliminary hearings of a historic lawsuit launched by Bil’in village against two Quebec-based companies, Green Park International and Green Mount International. The night-time raid of August 3 is just one in a series of many carried out by Israeli forces in Bil’in since June 2009. These military raids coincided with the commencement of legal proceedings against Green Park International and Green Mount International in Canada.
The village has accused two Quebec-based companies, Green Park International and Green Mount International, of being involved in constructing illegal Israeli-only settlements on Bil'in lands.
Bil'in's lawsuit is based on Canada's Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act, signed into law in 2000. The landmark legislation facilitates the Canadian legal system's ability to hear cases rooted in breaches of international law.
The Bil'in lawsuit calls on the Quebec Superior Court to rule on whether the settlement construction violates the Fourth Geneva Convention, signed after the Second World War, which outlines international legalities for civilians and lands under foreign occupation. An initial ruling on the lawsuit in the Quebec Superior Court is still pending. Justice Louis-Paul Cullen is expected to rule within the next six months.
What you can do:
* Write a solidarity note to Bil’in villagers as they continue their non- violent protests and face continued arrests: committee@bilin-village.org
* Write to your Member of Parliament or give your constituency office a call. Express your concern about the violent dispersals of peaceful demonstrations and the detention of protesters without charge, both of which have escalated since the village launched its lawsuit in a Canadian court. CNIB move to create cost savings, efficiencies
(HALIFAX – Aug. 17, 2009) CNIB announced today that it has sold its building on Almon St. in Halifax to Westwood Developments and will be moving to a new temporary location in November 2009.
For the next two years, CNIB’s Halifax office will be located on the main floor of The Westwood at Gladstone Ridge, 2717 Gladstone St., around the corner from the Almon St. building.
“We have been served very well by our current location, but our clients’ needs have changed substantially since the Almon St. facility was built in 1971,” said Duncan Williams, CNIB’s executive director for the Maritime provinces. “With this move, we’ll be in a better position to meet our clients’ needs by cutting costs and investing that savings into programs and services.”
“The temporary location will allow us to plan a more appropriate, functional space for the future – and we look forward to sharing the details of that longer-term plan with our clients, donors, volunteers and the public at our annual community meeting on Sept. 22, 2009,” said Mr. Williams.
In addition to the Halifax building, CNIB recently sold its offices in Charlottetown and Fredericton after a national real estate portfolio review; the charity is now leasing offices in these locations.
“CNIB assessed the appropriateness of all its properties,” said Board Chair, Brian Lugar. “With 14 staff occupying only one-third of a two-storey, 18,000 square-foot building, it was clear the Almon St. facility was not conducive to meeting the needs of Nova Scotians with vision loss.”
More than 5,000 clients in the region rely on CNIB, but another statistics indicate another 25,000 Nova Scotians could benefit from its programs and services.
CNIB is a nationwide, community-based, registered charity committed to public education, research and the vision health of all Canadians. CNIB provides the services and support necessary to enjoy a good quality of life while living with vision loss. To find out more, call 1-800 563-2642 or visit us online at www.cnib.ca.
