Vision 2019 Sunday set for June 7
Ali Symons
General Synod Web Writer
Trinity Sunday, June 7, is a time to think big. All parishes are
encouraged to think about the future of the Anglican Church of Canada by
joining in on Vision 2019, a church-wide exercise to discern, dream, and
decide where God wants the church to be by the year 2019.
Trinity Sunday is a great time to think about the future mission of the
church, says Dr. Eileen Scully, General Synod's coordinator for ministry
and worship. "The church is invited to participate in the life of the
Trinity," she explained. "The unity of the Trinity isn't for its own
sake. The love binding the persons of the Trinity spills out into
creation, and this is where the church's mission comes from."
Vision 2019 is unlike past plans for the church's mission: it aims to
get grassroots input from as many Canadian Anglicans as possible.
Everyone is invited to answer the two-part question "Where is your
church now, and where do you want the Anglican Church of Canada to be by
2019?"
The fun part is that people can pick how to answer the question. They
can
* Make a toll-free call: 1-866-496-3057
* Post a video online at www.anglican.ca/vision2019/yourstory
* Send an email to vision2019@national.anglican.ca
* Mail a letter: Vision 2019 / Anglican Church of Canada / 80 Hayden
Street / Toronto, Ont. / M4Y 3G2
"To tell us your story is to tell us your walk of discipleship, as
you're living into the Trinity," notes Ms. Scully. "Where is Jesus
calling you? How is the Holy Spirit binding you together? How are you
honouring the gifts of God the creator?"
All responses sent in by October 1 will be analyzed by the Vision 2019
committee and a professional analyst. The team will look at the range of
responses and present their findings to the whole church at General
Synod 2010.
If your parish is interested in adding a Vision 2019 focus to your June
7 service, many resources are available (all in PDF):
1. Sunday school material, prepared by Fiona Brownlee, communications
officer, Council of the North:
www.anglican.ca/v2019/yourstory/pdf/V2019Sunday_school.pdf
2. A bulletin insert explaining the project and ideas for getting
involved:
a) in black and white:
www.anglican.ca/v2019/yourstory/pdf/V2019-bi-bw.pdf
b) in colour:
www.anglican.ca/v2019/yourstory/pdf/V2019-bi-colour.pdf
3. A summary sheet outlining what Vision 2019 is:
www.anglican.ca/v2019/pdf/v2019-intro.pdf
4. A list of ideas on how individuals and parishes can get involved with
Vision 2019:
www.anglican.ca/v2019/pdf/v2019-ideas.pdf
If you want to dig deeper, the Vision 2019 committee has encouraged
Canadian Anglicans to take a look at the Anglican Communion's Five Marks
of Mission--a good launching pad to think about the future of our
church. There is a six-week Marks of Mission study available:

Praying with St Antony of the Desert: Study in Retreat June 2-7, 2009
This course is intended for any who are seeking a time of focused learning accompanied by retreat and spiritual direction and is scheduled so as to allow for significant periods of rest, reading, exercise, meditation, and prayer. The Daily Office of Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Compline will be said daily in the Chapel, and there will be a daily celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
Retreat Description: The end of the third century witnessed a startling exodus of men and women from the towns and cities of ancient Egypt into the surrounding wilderness of the Egyptian desert. These men and women became the first Christian monks, and their way of life grew out of a radical identification with the Scripture’s great desert pilgrims: Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist and, above all, Jesus Christ. Born in Egypt in the year 251, tradition calls St. Antony the Great father of these monks. Though not the first Christian to retire to the desert to lead a life of prayer, Antony was among the first to organize a community of monastics around the hermitage of an Abba, or spiritual elder, and his extraordinary life inspired countless generations of monastics to follow the path of self-denial for the sake of Christ. This summer’s programme will explore St. Athansius’ biography of St. Antony. Written shortly after Antony’s death in 356, the biography details Antony’s life and spiritual teachings and was the primary vehicle for the popularisation of Antony’s legacy. Seven letters and numerous sayings are also attributed to Antony. Readings from the Life will be supplemented by these texts as needed to gain a sense of the larger context of ancient Egyptian monasticism. The goal of the week is for participants to retreat into the desert with Antony and place themselves at the feet of one of the towering figures of Christian spirituality. In this way, along with so many generations before us, we can wait for a word from this spiritual elder which can lead us into deeper communion with God and each other.
Required text: Athanasius, The Life of Anthony: The Coptic Life and the Greek Life, trans. T. Vivian and A. N. Athanassakis, with Rowan A. Greer, preface by Benedicta Ward, SLG, foreword by Rowan Williams. Kalamazoo: Cistercian, 2003.
Instructor/Director: The Rev’d Christopher Snook, B.A. (Vind.), M.A. (English) (McMaster), M.A. (Theol.) (Concordia)
Spiritual Director: The Rev’d Professor Walter Hannam, B.A. (Vind.), M.A. (Dalhousie), Ph.D. cand. (Boston College)
Retreat Leaders:
Christopher Snook was ordained deacon in the Anglican Church of Canada in 2005 and priested in 2006. A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, he began his ministry in the Diocese of Saskatchewan and currently serves in the Diocese of Ohio. Prior to his ordination, Father Snook taught for three year’s in the Foundation Year Programme at the University of King’s College in Halifax. He holds two graduate degrees, one in English with a specialisation in nineteenth-century Anglican homiletics; a second in Theology, with a thesis on the Life, Letters, and Sayings of St. Antony the Great. Walter Hannam is Professor of Theology and Anglican Studies and Dean of Chapel at the College of Emmanuel and St Chad, and a priest of the Diocese of Saskatchewan. After studies in Classics, Philosophy, and Theology at the University of King’s College, Dalhousie University, and the Atlantic School of Theology, Father Hannam proceeded to doctoral studies at Boston College, specialising in patristic and mediaeval theology. He holds a seat on the editorial board of the Anglican Theological Review and has published articles on the thought of St Augustine of Hippo. He is co-editor of Divine Creation in Ancient, Medieval, and Early Modern Thought, Brill’s Studies in Intellectual History 151 (Leiden: Brill, 2007), a Festschrift volume in honour of the distinguished Canadian theologian Robert Crouse. |

2010 Commemorative Stole
As part of the upcoming 2010 celebrations, special commemorative stoles will be available for purchase by parishes and individual clergy. The stoles will be a cream coloured straight cut design and will bear a machine embroidered 2010 logo. The estimated cost will be in the vicinity of $50. The work is being done on a volunteer basis by a small group of interested and experienced, "top notch" seamstresses, for the sole purpose of beautifying and contributing to the celebration of our 300th anniversary as a diocese. We are planning to have 100 commemorative stoles ready for the 2009 Synod. Priests and parish representatives are encouraged to purchase and pick-up their stoles at that time. Many of the stoles are already spoken for. If you would like a stole and have not yet contacted Daphne please do so and she will reserve one for you.

ASSCENSION DAY, this Thursday, May 21 will be celebrated with a service of Choral Holy Communion at 7:30 pm. On the day of his Ascension, Our Lord raised into heaven the human nature which he had taken on through the Incarnation. In the Collect, we pray that we too may in heart and mind "thither ascend and with him continually dwell." With Christmas and Easter, Ascension Day is one of the great festivals of the Church. Come and participate in worship on Thursday, so that we can encourage one another to live as a community which draws its life from union with our Ascended Lord. Prayer is one of the chief means by which our daily lives and concerns are raised up and transformed. Music by Harold Darke, Luca Marenzio, William Byrd & J.S. Bach. |

What Is Stewardship?
As we strive to live as faithful and generous stewards, it is important that we understand all of the facets of stewardship. Here are just a few more aspects of stewardship. Stewardship is:
Spending Time with God - Stewardship involves spending time with God. Recognizing that every day is a gift from God, we strive to spend some of each day with God, through prayer, attending church or gatherings, scripture reading, quiet, meditation and other spiritual activities.
Sharing Talent - Stewardship involves sharing talent. Recognizing that God has given each individual unique skills and talents so that together we can do the work of Our Lord, we strive to share our own talents and to encourage and welcome others to also use their talents to carry out the mission and ministry of the Church.
Giving Treasure - Stewardship involves giving treasure. Giving time and talent does not excuse us from giving treasure. We know that throughout the Gospels, Jesus challenged us to give as it has been given to us. Recognizing the tremendous financial blessings that abound in our country, we strive to give at least 10% of our resources back to God, to support the building up of God’s kingdom. Although this level of giving may not be immediately possible, we are aware of what percentage we are giving back and regularly strive to increase the amount, taking small incremental steps toward giving a full tithe. -An excerpt from the St. Louis Archdiocesan Stewardship Education Council
