Writers needed!

MinistryMatters is a magazine that publishes articles, resources, and
information to inspire and support Canadian Anglican leaders in their
ministry. This award-winning publication is now moving online, and we’re
looking for a few good columnists.

WHAT WE NEED:
-Online columnists would write one 500- to 750-word article each month
for a six-month stint. Articles could address a range of topics
interesting to Canadian Anglican leaders.
-If readers post comments in response to an article, columnists are
expected to keep up with the discussion and throw their two cents in.

WHO WE NEED:
-Canadian Anglicans (especially, but not necessarily, in ordained
ministry) who think interesting thoughts and write dazzling prose.

WHAT TO DO NEXT:
-Email a short statement of introduction, three column ideas, and two
writing samples to Ali Symons at asymons@national.anglican.
ca by May 1, 2009.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Ali Symons
Editor, MinistryMatters

2010 Commemorative Stole

As part of the upcoming 2010 celebrations, special commemorative stoles will be available for purchase by parishes and individual clergy. The stoles will be a cream coloured straight cut design and will bear a machine embroidered 2010 logo. The estimated cost will be in the vicinity of $50. The work is being done on a volunteer basis by a small group of interested and experienced, "top notch" seamstresses, for the sole purpose of beautifying and contributing to the celebration of our 300th anniversary as a diocese. We are planning to have 100 commemorative stoles ready for the 2009 Synod. Priests and parish representatives are encouraged to purchase and pick-up their stoles at that time. Many of the stoles are already spoken for. If you would like a stole and have not yet contacted Daphne please do so and she will reserve one for you.

Keramion Trio

Paul Halley ~ Nick Halley ~ Jon Suters

An Evening of Soul-Stirring Music for piano, percussion, guitar and organ

Halifax, NS – Atlantic School of Theology is pleased to present the Keramion Trio in concert on Wednesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Four-time Grammy winner Paul Halley leads the trio in selections from recent recordings, featuring music that happily mixes Brazilian with Bach, African with Appalachian, and jazz with Gesualdo. Nick Halley is a world percussion master who recently released his debut CD “Barnum Hill” to wide acclaim throughout the US jazz community. He also doubles on keyboards for this lively performance. Jon Suters is a classically-trained guitarist from the Berkshires whose take on just about all music involving six strings has gained him a large following in the New York/Boston area. Watch for Jon to take a turn on the bass at some point in the evening.

Aside from the set pieces on the program, this trio is known to break into an improvisation or two. Come along for the ride and let the music begin!

STEWARDSHIP:

Stewardship of Creation
In recognition of Earth Day 2009 what can we do to be aware of our responsibility for the earth. There is a great website earthministry.org which offers a a Christian perspective. The following is an excerpt from the site.

Psalm 24 states that “the Earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.”  Humans simply hold the Earth in trust for God.  We are tenants here, called to care for the creation on behalf of future generations and all species. The Bible calls us to “till and keep the garden” and names human beings as the trustees of creation. Because God created all the Earth and all of us, creation is beautiful and good and sacred.  We are called by our devotion to God and our love for God’s works to protect it.

A member of the Parish of Clements Council recently heard a commentary on CBC Radio about 2 Canadians that are running a school/home for orphaned children in Haiti. The head lady has used up all of her life savings trying to feed, cloth, school, etc these children and they are in real need from month to month just to survive.

The Diocese has confirmed with PWRDF that they do no work in Haiti.  Bishop Sue notes that Haiti is part of the Episcopal Church USA, and that some of our people might appreciate knowing about this project.

This orphanage has a web site - hats-haiti.com- which explains what this agency is all about.

Two-Eyed Seeing - Native Wisdom as our Climate Changes

May 2, 10am - 4pm

Western science and technology has led us to where we are today - a world of pollution, imbalance, extinctions and threatening climate change. We fear that the knowledge that got us here will not get us out! Welcome to a vision that integrates our prevailing understandings with Traditional Indigenous Worldviews. Two-Eyed Seeing brings together the guiding principles, knowledge and strengths of indigenous worldviews with those of Western science and technology, offering us a more complete picture of our world - and so a more complete approach toward the proper care for our planet.

When we integrate our perspectives, we can more easily integrate ourselves, and move forward together to heal our planet.

Join the Aboriginal Rights Coalition - Atlantic, for this truly cross-cultural experience of our world! Led by Elders Albert and Murdena Marshall, we will learn about Two-Eyed Seeing, and then peer through this lens as we examine our world, our relationships and our ways forward together. All are welcome to this accessible, inclusive gathering.

Albert Marshall and Murdena Marshall are Elders of Eskasoni First Nation, who helped to establish and teach Two-Eyed Seeing in the Integrative Science program at Cape Breton University. Albert Marshall is a 2009 recipient of the Eco-Hero Award for Nova Scotia. For an introduction to Two-Eyed Seeing, view a video at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4641523553883632087.

Cost: $40 (includes program, lunch and snacks)

Spend time with one of Canada's leading thinkers and writers, who deeply challenges our beliefs, politics and understandings of environment, taking us courageously into necessary new territories and ideas!

The Heart of the Human Project: Our Contemporary Vocation

May 11-13

Tatamagouche Centre

What is the goal of "civilization" if its thrust forward leaves behind the world's ecosystems and a large percentage of our children as veritable roadkill? What on earth are we doing?

Spend time with the irrepressible Stephen Bede Scharper, in hopeful exploration of the connections between liberation and ecological worldviews, the Option for the Poor and the Option for the Earth. Touch at the very heart of the human project. Using the framework of both a theology of liberation, such as espoused by Gustavo Gutierrez, and of the new cosmology, as proposed by Thomas Berry, courageously unmask the foundational questions raised by our global environmental and poverty crises. Build hope, and become empowered, not paralyzed, amidst the sobering reality of global warming and global poverty.

Leadership:

Stephen Bede Scharper is an Associate Professor of Environmental Ethics, Centre for Environment, University of Toronto, and the Department of Anthropology (UTM). A widely published essayist and popular lecturer, he is Faith and Ethics columnist for the Toronto Star, and author of Redeeming the Time; A Political Theology of the Environment. He will be joined by Wilf Bean and Nan Corrigan.

Cost: $390 ($235 tuition + $155 meals/accommodation)
