Holy Wednesday - Tenebrae This evening at 7:30 pm, the beautiful and ancient service of Tenebrae will be sung by the men of St. George’s Choir under the direction of Music Director Paul Halley. The music will feature the “Lamentations of Jeremiah.” Twenty-five lights are set up on a Tenebrae Hearse, representing the twelve prophets and twelve disciples and Christ, and gradually extinguished as the service progresses. The one remaining light, the Light of Christ, is hidden away and then brought back as the service ends.
Maundy Thursday – Foot Washing, Commemoration of the Institution of the Last Supper On Maundy Thursday at 7:30 pm, the service begins with the Rector washing the feet of twelve representative members of the congregation, while the choir sings Duruflé’s “Ubi Caritas” and Tallis’“A New Commandment Give I Unto You.” The mass setting will be Palestrina’s Missa Brevis and the Communion Motet will be John Shepherd’s “In Manus Tuas.” The full choir will be present, under the direction of Paul Halley. The preacher will be the Rev’d Dr Thomas Curran, Assistant Professor at the University of King’s College and Adjunct Professor in the Classics and German Departments at Dalhousie University. At the end of the service, the church and altar are laid bare and the sacrament is taken to the altar of repose, prior to an all night vigil. “Could ye not watch with me one hour?”
Good Friday – Stations of the Cross and Three Hour Service At 10 am, the Stations of the Cross will be conducted for the children, followed by the preparation of the Easter Garden and Tomb of Christ. This service will be signed for the Deaf. From 12-3pm, the full choir will sing, under the direction of Paul Halley. Dr Neil Robertson, Associate Professor in the Foundation Year, Early Modern Studies and Contemporary Studies Programmes, will preach. There will be music by Byrd, Gabrieli and Purcell, with the choir under the direction of Aniko Lewton-Brain. The liturgy features the lighting of the new fire, the renewal of baptismal vows, the re-dressing of the church for Easter, and finally culminates with the First Eucharist of Easter, the Feast of Feasts. On Easter Sunday morning at 10:30, the St. George’s Brass will be present to accompany some of the music and Paul Halley will direct the full choir in the singing of the Messe Solennelle by Langlais (with Brass), the Easter Anthems: Christ Our Passover by Halley, Offertory Anthem: Surgens Jesus by Peter Philips, and O Sacrum Convivium by Thomas Tallis. St. Cecilia Concert Society presents Ernst Family Singers and Togni Concert
Everything from Chant to Palestrina to Beatbox
Lunenburg’s treasured family of singers joins forces with the Halifax based Togni Consort, conducted by Peter Togni, Canadian choral icon, composer, organist, jazz musician and current host and producer of CBC’s Choral Concert. The concert takes place at St. John’s Anglican Church on Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 pm.
The Ernst Family is a vocal ensemble consisting of ten members, aged seven to adult, singing everything from solos to eight-part harmony. They perform Renaissance, classical, traditional sacred, spiritual, and folk music. Most of the music is sung a cappella, with an occasional piano or guitar accompaniment. The genetic similarity of the voices gives a harmonious blend rare in unrelated voices. The six eldest children also perform as the Ernst Family Sibtet.
The Togni Concert is a 10 voice a capella mixed choir (SATB) specializing in renaissance polyphony and gregorian chant. The Halifax based consort was formed in 2006 under the direction of Peter Togni.
Tickets for the concert are $15 ($5 for students) and are available at Fulton’s Pharmacy and at the door.
The St. Cecilia Concert Society gratefully acknowledges the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Doctor Piano, Women for Music, O'Regan's and individual patrons.

Coloured Eggs and Bunnies ![]()
The Easter season is upon us and is filled with coloured eggs, bunnies, candy, and all of the other signs that this joyful day brings to mind. Easter is a special time to gather and to celebrate, but as Christians it is also a time to reflect on another sign – the special gift of everlasting life that Jesus has given to each of us this day. As Christian stewards, we are
called to be especially mindful of our Lord’s gift, and how after His resurrection the disciples were instructed to go and make disciples of all the nations. Each of us has been baptized into this discipleship, and we too must heed Jesus’ words.
Whenever discussions about stewardship arise, they often turn to a narrow focus on only the money aspect of stewardship.
Like Easter, there is much more to stewardship, and we are challenged to see the whole picture about both. If we focus too narrowly on one idea, we may lose track of the real meaning of both stewardship and Easter. We have been given the responsibility as Christian stewards, to respond to the mission and ministry of the Church. How each of us chooses to manage the gifts we have been given will determine if these objectives can and will be met. As we celebrate Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday, let the signs of Spring, of bunnies, candy coloured eggs and new life, be reminders of all of the gifts God has entrusted to our care. How are we investing our time and resources in such a way that others will hear and live?

The Heart of the Human Project: Our Contemporary Vocation
May 11-13
Tatamagouche Centre
What is the goal of "civilization" if its thrust forward leaves behind the world's ecosystems and a large percentage of our children as veritable roadkill? What on earth are we doing?
Spend time with the irrepressible Stephen Bede Scharper, in hopeful exploration of the connections between liberation and ecological worldviews, the Option for the Poor and the Option for the Earth. Touch at the very heart of the human project. Using the framework of both a theology of liberation, such as espoused by Gustavo Gutierrez, and of the new cosmology, as proposed by Thomas Berry, courageously unmask the foundational questions raised by our global environmental and poverty crises. Build hope, and become empowered, not paralyzed, amidst the sobering reality of global warming and global poverty.
Leadership:
Stephen Bede Scharper is an Associate Professor of Environmental Ethics, Centre for Environment, University of Toronto, and the Department of Anthropology (UTM). A widely published essayist and popular lecturer, he is Faith and Ethics columnist for the Toronto Star, and author of Redeeming the Time; A Political Theology of the Environment. He will be joined by Wilf Bean and Nan Corrigan.
Cost: $390 ($235 tuition + $155 meals/accommodation)
