What is 2010?

300 Years of continuous Anglican Worship in the Diocese. It began with a Service of Thanksgiving at Port Royal on Oct. 10, 1710. With this service there has been continual Anglican Worship here. We also celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the opening of the Cathedral Church of All Saints, on September 10th, 1910. Our theme is "A journey Just Begun" from the Common Praise song "She Flies on." 2010 Anniversary events will take place during the time leading up to the October 2010 celebration.

What's being done now?

A special anniversary prayer has been composed, and a hand-made wooden processional cross has been constructed. Every Parish has received copies in the form of a Prayer card for distribution to Parishioners and also to be placed in ther prayer Books.

Under "Our Faith Community", you can see updated Diocesan and individual parish profiles including photo's , sermons and more!

Gospel Book

At the beginning of this year, we received from our bookbinder a beautifully hand-bound copy of the Gospels. A hand-made case for its travels through the Diocese goes with it. Our new Gospel Book has begun its journey around the Diocese—a journey that will take some two years—and will be available for use in every parish and region. Contact your Regional Dean for dates in your Region. Two Deacons are organizing the travel schedule: Kathryn Cook and Lynda Downing.

If your parish uses only the BCP Lectionary, you will find most of the Gospel readings for the BCP in the Gospel Book. If not, you might want to photocopy the BCP reading and insert it between the pages of the Gospel Book for use on a Sunday in your parish. The Committee also encourages parishes to use the Gospel Book as a focal point for other celebrations, such as a Day of Prayer or Parish Renewal, etc.

Eucharistic Vestments

Daphne Gabriel has made a beautiful set of Eucharistic vestments, including a chasuble, dalmatic, tunicle, matching stoles and maniples, a superfrontal and related decorative furnishings for our celebration. If your parish wishes to borrow these vestments for events celebrating 2010, please contact the Rev. James Purchase or phone at 455-1888. Daphne made a cope and mitre for Bishop Moxley, our Diocesan Bishop.

Processional Cross

This beautiful Processional Cross for our 2010 Celebration was conceived by the Rev. Arthur C. Snow, retired Priest of St. Luke's Anglican Church, Dartmouth, NS commemorating 300 Years of Anglican Worship in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Our motto A Journey Just begun (1710-2010).

Designed and constructed by William Zinck of St. James' Anglican Church, Kentville. The inlaid carvings (the IHS and Fish) are by Donald Marston, retired R.C.M.P. Officer, and a member of St. John's Anglican Church, Wolfville, NS (The IHS are the first 3 letters [iota, eta, sigma] of the Greek spelling of Jesus; the Fish was used by the early persecuted Christians to designate themselves as believers in Jesus, and in Greek the word "ixthus" stands for "Jesus (I) Christ (X), God's (TH) Son (U) , Saviour (S)"). The Cross is constructed of Nova Scotia Ash, a white durable hardwood: and red Bloodwood from Brazil. The Cross symbolizes the sacrifice of God. Red arrows, pointing N,E,S,W symbolizing the church's spread throughout the world. The Staff is constructed of N.S. Ash. All these woods have been donated by the management of East Coast Specialty Hardwoods, Burnside, NS. The Diocese extends thanks and appreciation to William Zinck, Donald Marston and the Management of East Coast Specialty Hardwoods. The 2010 Anniversary Committee extends thanks and appreciation to all these men for their expertise and dedication for their commitment to this project. The cross, will be dedicated at Synod in May.

Parish Visioning

Every Parish has received the “Parish Visioning Manual” and we encourage your Parish to begin implementing that program. It is well laid out, and those Parishes that have already used it, have found it a good program. Our celebration is not just about our past, it is also about our future - what do we want our Church and our Parish to be like after 2010?

Lapel Pins

These are still available at the Diocesan Office or the ACW Office (if opened). The pins sell for $3.00. Parish Groups may buy them at $1.50 and sell for $3.00, thus make $1.50 per pin for their Group. You can also contact the Rev. James Purchase (jhpurchase@hotmail.com Or 902-455-1888). They will also be on sale at Exhibition Park on June 6th at $3.00, before and after the Service.

The last chapter contains a picture (most in colour) and a brief up-to-date history of every Parish in the Diocese. He has worked extensively on this book - volunteering his time and talents - and the 2010 Committee is most pleased to recommend this historical work to all of our people. It is a "bargain" too - only $35.00 (other books on the market like this one would cost more). Diocesan Profile

A profile of our Diocese, who we are, what we are about, where we hope to be, is in progress.

Parish of Annapolis

During 2010 the Parish of Annapolis is planning a series of celebratory events, notably an anniversary celebration at Fort Anne on Oct. 10, 2010. Music services and concerts are planned including one featuring Chester Brass with Purcell’s “The Queen’s Funeral March, a Royal Consort. Another celebration, Natal Day 2010, an historic service with the 85th West Highland Regiment is in the works. More information to come—keep checking our website.

Regional Events

We encourage regions to plan events in their own region. Some funds are available to help with this. What about a youth event? What about a “pilgrimage” to various historical churches or places of interest in your area? What about a concert? Or just getting everyone in the region together to celebrate our Anglican heritage?

As the time becomes closer to 2010, we will be passing on new information. Please keep your congregation up to date, and we promise to keep you up to date as well. Thank you for sharing this exciting work with us.
